Job Description
Mystic Seaport Museum is seeking camp counselors for our Joseph Conrad Overnight Summer Sailing Camp. During this residential summer program campers and staff sleep aboard an historic fullrigged ship the Joseph Conrad learn to sail Dyer Dhows and participate in fun activities in the evenings including a Planetarium show climbing the rigging and more. This position is responsible for assisting in the daytoday camp operation including supervising CounselorsinTraining and campers and implementing evening activities. This position is responsible for creating and implementing all afternoon and evening activities; counselors will not be responsible for instructing sailing. The position requires great leadership skills and the ability to work well with children. Room and board is included meals provided while camp is in session. Camp Counselors work mostly in the afternoon and evenings this includes blocks of time off every day. A willingness to work a flexible schedule according to the needs of the camp is essential.

Responsibilities:
- Lead by example as a role model who sets the tone for positive youth development.
- Prepare lessons for campers.
- Maintain an inventory of all supplies and materials.
- Assist with checkin/out of campers.
- Assists in daytoday activities.
- Mentor teenagers in our Counselor in Training (CIT) program.
- Help create and carry out the Apprentice Program: an indepth weeklong study for campers interested in Marlinspike Seamanship Art Marine Science Astronomy or other interest areas.
- Maintain close communication with group leaders to ensure smooth program operations.
- Participate with activities and help facilitate transition times and supervise campers.
- Create lesson plans for all landbased activities.
- Create lessons for apprenticeship programs.
- Adhere to all camp safety guidelines.
Required Qualifications:
- At least 18 years of age.
- Strong organizational skills.
- Current American Red Cross First Aid and CPR certification (training provided).
- Experience working with children and youth in formal or informal settings; ability to engage children and youth in a dynamic and energetic manner.
- A positive enthusiastic and flexible attitude.
- Integrity patience adaptability a sense of humor enthusiasm and a commitment to serve youth.
- Strong problemsolving skills and an ability to adapt to changing program needs depending on weather number of students etc.
- Excellent customer service and communication skills.
- Responsible and mature.
Desirable Qualifications:
- Previous residential camp experience
- Lifeguarding Certification
Physical/Mental Requirements and Environmental Conditions:
- Deliver programs in venues that can be cold wet hot or dirty; work outside in all weather
- Position requires sufficient eyesight hearing and physical stamina to fulfill successfully the requirements of the Joseph Conrad Overnight Sailing Summer Camp program.
- Weekend and holiday work assignments are required
