This position is responsible for supporting the patient / physician needs of the BWFH Spine Center with overall responsibility for maintaining efficiency of patient flow. Medical Assistant will work collaboratively in a multi disciplinary setting with neurosurgery orthopedic surgery pain management and physiatry. Will be responsible for greeting patients in an appropriate manner updating patients on wait times escorting patients into the exam rooms and taking vital signs (height weight temperature blood pressure and others as directed). Medical Assistant will support Meaningful Use Initiative by gathering information on allergy smoking and family medical history and documenting in EMR. Will assist with routine and complex procedures within the practice as needed. Will be responsible for ordering tracking and maintaining supplies within the practice and assists with proper inventory control. Responsible for ensuring exam rooms are cleaned stocked and prepared for patient care through out assigned shift. Will provide hand off communication to other medical assistants prior to lunch break and at end of shift. Medical Assistant will complete other duties as assigned by supervisor / manager.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Indicate key areas of responsibility major job duties special projects and key objectives for this position. These items should be evaluated throughout the year and included in the written annual evaluation.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES:
1. Greets patients as they arrive for appointment and escorts into exam rooms. Updates patients on wait time per Ambulatory Council Guidelines.
2. Will assist the physician and other providers with acquisition of necessary supplies / procedures within scope of practice.
3. Will assist in determining reason for patient visit and prepare patients for all exams. Takes vital signs; height weight and temperature. Gathers data allergies to assist with meaningful use initiative. Updates pharmacy information in Epic and assists in Patient Gateway enrollment efforts.
4. Cleans prepares and stocks room for next day. Responsible for maintaining all supplies in assigned suite and notifying responsible party when more supplies are in need of being ordered.
5. Ensures all forms have demographic labels affixed front and back for 2 sided forms.
6. Performs monthly check of meds / supplies to ensure expiration dates as adhered to.
7. Participates in daily Joint Commission readiness by use of two patient identifiers identifying safety hazards and elevating concerns to supervisor follows best safe practices for storage of equipment clutter management hand hygiene etc
8. Works in a cohesive manner to instill a sense of team within Spine Center and MSK. Establishes and maintains appropriate operational rapport with management and physicians to enhance both employee morale and patient satisfaction.
9. Actively participates at departmental staff meetings and makes ongoing suggestions to assist in continuous process improvement for department. Follows all departmental standard operational procedures and hospital wide Policies and Procedures.
10. Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS: (MUST be realistic neither overstated nor understated and related to the essential functions of the job.
College educated candidates considering medical careers; physician physician assistants nursing etc are encouraged to apply and highly desirable
1. High School Diploma or equivalent.
2. Graduate of an approved Medical Assistant Certification Program (or demonstrated knowledge of competencies required to perform essential functions of position).
3. 12 years of prior clinical experience in an Ambulatory setting helpful but will train if candidate demonstrates excellent customer service and critical thinking skills
SKILLS/ ABILITIES/ COMPETENCIES REQUIRED: (MUST be realistic neither overstated nor understated and related to the essential functions of the job.
1. Exceptional interpersonal communication and customer service skills are essential.
2. Strong clinical and assessment skills are essential.
3. Good organizational skills are required to prioritize tasks effectively
4. Ability to work successfully as a team player.
5. Demonstrated knowledge of varied medical procedures such as phlebotomy EKGs vital signs etc.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Describe the conditions in which the work is performed.
1. Ability to transport patients and equipment throughout the Hospital 1020 of time.
2. Ability to assist patients in exam room; may require lifting of patients.
3. Ability to lift and maneuver equipment (up to 50 pounds).
4. May require travel to off site locations to assist with coverage as needed
