WHO WE NEEDThe Leacross Foundation Internship Program is for a summer internship at ROM for femaleidentifying students representing a partnership that will build and strengthen the careers of undergraduate scholars while advancing ROMs position as a premier Canadian research institution. There will be a cohort of five interns one in Biodiversity one in Earth and Space (including Climate Change) Fossils Art & Culture and Collections Care. These interns will meet throughout the summer to learn more about the ROM and the different collections and initiatives.
The Leacross Foundation seeks a motivated individual for the Internship in Collections Care. This position involves collaboration across various Natural History disciplines focusing on the processing and archiving documents and other historical materials to ensure their preservation for future use in the ROM archives. Each collection area within Natural History is supported by its own archive.
The key responsibilities include conducting a comprehensive inventory of all the Department of Natural History archival materials. In collaboration with the ROM archivist the intern will assess the historical significance of these materials to identify items that should be permanently preserved in the ROM archive. Additionally the intern will process materials by classifying cataloging and indexing them by established archival practices.
The intern will be able to engage with other Leacross Foundation interns to gain insights into different areas of the institution beyond Natural History. They will be encouraged to share their projects with fellow interns.
HOW YOU WILL MAKE AN IMPACT- Work closely with Curators Collections Technicians and Collections Specialists identifying any archival material in each area.
- In conjunction with the ROM archivist evaluate the historical significance of materials to determine which items should be permanently preserved in the archive.
- Organizing materials by classifying cataloging and indexing them according to established archival practices
- Creating metadata for each item including information about its content creator date and context.
- Implement the appropriate preservation and storage for varying materials.
- Provides quality control ensuring the integrity consistency and sharing of the organizations centralized data resources and digital assets.
- Engage with the other Leacross Interns within the institution to learn about their projects and other areas within the institution.
WHAT YOU BRING- Enrolled in a postsecondary Museum Studies or Library Sciences program OR an acceptable equivalent in education and experience.
- Demonstrated experience in object handling and archives particularly with an aptitude for independent and collaborative work and strong attention to detail is an asset.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word Excel PowerPoint etc. would be an asset.
- Strong writing/communication abilities and practical knowledge of data management reporting.
