Job Summary
The Kinesiology and Public Health Department in the Bailey College of Science and Mathematics at California Polytechnic State University San Luis Obispo is seeking to fill one fulltime academic year tenure track position in exercise physiology with appointment beginning September 11 2025. The department seeks candidates with a record of training in diversity equity and inclusion in teaching research and/or service. The candidate should have demonstrated experience working with Latinx/e and/or Black and/or historically underserved populations in teaching research and/or service.
Appointment at the Assistant Professor rank is anticipated; higher ranks will be considered. Rank and salary are commensurate with qualifications and experience.

In an initiative to expand its teaching and research program on Exercise Physiology within its Bachelor of Science in Public Health degree program the Department of Kinesiology and Public Health at California Polytechnic State University invites applications from a broad spectrum of qualified individuals with a commitment to undergraduate teaching and research. The selected person will be responsible for teaching upperdivision core curriculum courses in the Kinesiology Program including Clinical Exercise Physiology Physical Activity and Public Health Physical Activity and Gerontology and/or Introduction to Research Methods. The candidate will have a record of training DEI curriculum development in Clinical Exercise Physiology and/or Physical Activity and Public Health. Preferred areas of research include but are not limited to the myriad of ways that systematic forms of oppression (e.g. racism ageism ableism heterosexism etc. intersect with promoting physical activity for improved health role of physical activity in chronic disease prevention and treatment; physical activity and aging; physical activity and muscle growth and atrophy; physical activity and reproductive function and health; or other closely related exercise physiology research.
Cal Poly strongly values diversity equity and inclusion (DEI) in the classroom in scholarship and in service experience. This position is part of a universitywide cluster of searches designed to increase curricular coverage of areas related to DEI as well as to promote inclusive and equityminded teaching strategies across the university. Successful candidates will be expected to contribute to the universitys goals in these areas. Candidates selected through this DEI cluster hire will be given startup funds to support their work in DEI and a dedicated mentor will be given upon appointment. Once hired candidates will collaborate with their dean and others to develop a plan for utilizing these funds for supplemental compensation assigned time or professional development activities.

About the Department
The Department of Kinesiology and Public Health is a major academic unit within the College of Science and Mathematics offering a BS in Kinesiology and a BS in Public Health. There are approximately 600 undergraduate students 13 full time faculty 4 full time lecturers 25 part time lecturers and 5 support staff. The mission of the Kinesiology and Public Health (KPH) Department is to promote physical activity and health for all through excellence in teaching research and service. The department launched a BS in Public Health enrolling the first cohort of students in the Fall of 2018. Our faculty are actively engaged teacher scholars who study are engages in scholarship across a broad range of kinesiology and public health disciplines including obesity and chronic disease prevention & treatment wearable sensors physical behavior epidemiology sport physiology health literacy and physical activity sport psychology exercise metabolism and hydration cycling biomechanics the health status of immigrant enclaves health communication cancer prevention health disparities and maternal and child health. The Center for Health Research (CHR) is a University Research Center housed within the Department of Kinesiology and Public Health that includes several ongoing multimilliondollar NIHfunded research grants. Projects include several longterm prospective human research studies involving hundreds of community participants dozens of local community contracts and partners and several national and international partners. External research grants currently fund approximately 15 staff positions including researchers faculty investigators research staff a community liaison database managers phlebotomists a technician student research fellows medical consultants and a translator. In addition 2030 undergraduate students conduct independent research in any given quarter.
