Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated and proactive Fire Life & Safety Specialist to join our team at Prairie View College. The ideal candidate will play a critical role in maintaining the safety of the campus by ensuring fire protection life safety systems and backup power systems (UPS and generators) meet all regulatory standards and are fully operational. This position requires someone who is highly knowledgeable in fire safety procedures building codes emergency response plans and backup power systems.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Fire Safety Systems Management:
    • Oversee the installation inspection maintenance and testing of all fire alarm systems fire suppression systems sprinkler systems and emergency exit signage.
    • Maintain uptodate records of all fire and life safety inspections tests and repairs.
  • Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) and Generator Testing:
    • Conduct regular testing and maintenance of the campus’s UPS systems and backup generators to ensure proper functioning in the event of power outages.
    • Collaborate with facilities management to ensure UPS systems and generators are ready for emergency use including routine load testing and battery replacement as needed.
    • Ensure all backup power systems comply with local and national regulations regarding emergency power supply systems.
  • Regulatory Compliance:
    • Ensure the campus is in compliance with all local state and federal fire safety laws and regulations (NFPA OSHA etc..
    • Stay current with fire safety codes standards and best practices to ensure the campus meets or exceeds compliance.
  • Emergency Response Planning:
    • Develop and maintain emergency evacuation plans fire drills and fire safety training programs for students faculty and staff.
    • Collaborate with campus security and emergency management teams to coordinate fire drills and preparedness exercises.
  • Training and Education:
    • Conduct regular fire safety education programs for all campus community members including fire extinguisher use evacuation procedures and emergency response.
    • Train campus personnel on fire safety policies and protocols ensuring readiness for any emergency situations.
  • Fire Incident Investigation:
    • Investigate any firerelated incidents on campus documenting findings and providing recommendations to prevent recurrence.
    • Serve as the campus liaison with local fire departments and emergency response teams as needed.
  • Equipment Maintenance and Inventory:
    • Monitor the condition and inventory of fire safety equipment including extinguishers hoses alarms sprinklers UPS systems and generators.
    • Coordinate necessary repairs or replacements as required to maintain operational integrity.
  • Risk Assessment:
    • Conduct regular fire and life safety inspections of campus buildings identifying potential hazards and areas for improvement.
    • Work with facilities management to address and mitigate any fire safety risks in buildings dormitories classrooms or other campus facilities.
  • Collaboration and Reporting:
    • Collaborate with campus administrators and departments to ensure the integration of fire safety protocols in overall campus risk management strategies.
    • Prepare regular reports on fire safety audits maintenance activities and safety training progress.
Qualifications:
  • Education:
    • Associate’s degree in Fire Science Occupational Safety or related field required; Bachelor’s degree preferred.
    • Certification as a Fire Protection Specialist (CFPS) or similar fire safety certification preferred.
  • Experience:
    • Minimum of 3 years of experience in fire life safety management preferably within a higher education setting or large public institution.
    • Experience with UPS systems backup generators fire alarm systems and emergency response plans required.
  • Skills and Abilities:
    • Strong knowledge of fire safety codes and regulations (NFPA OSHA ADA).
    • Knowledge of UPS systems and backup generators including maintenance and testing protocols.
    • Excellent communication and presentation skills capable of educating diverse groups of people.
    • Ability to conduct thorough safety inspections and hazard assessments.
    • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
    • Proficient in using fire safety equipment and systems (sprinklers alarms extinguishers etc..
    • Ability to respond calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
  • Certifications:
    • Fire Safety Inspection Certification preferred.
    • UPS and Generator Maintenance Certification preferred.
Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to walk stand and climb stairs during building inspections and fire drills.
  • Ability to lift and carry fire safety equipment such as fire extinguishers hoses and other gear as needed.
  • Must be able to respond to emergencies including potential overnight shifts or being oncall.
