Job Description

The Nurse Practitioner (NP) role in this service will report to the Director of Perioperative Services in collaboration with the Chief of Anesthesiology to assess and optimize patients scheduled for surgery. The successful candidate will promote clinical excellence quality patientcentered care and high professional standards. At Milton District Hospital surgical specialties include orthopedics general surgery gynecology urology ENT plastics and obstetrics. The NP role is derived from blending clinical diagnostic and therapeutic knowledge skills and abilities within a nursing framework that emphasizes holism health promotion and partnership with individuals and families as well as communities. They provide leadership in the development implementation and evaluation of strategies to promote health and prevent illness or injury and they work with interprofessional teams other healthcare professional teams and community members.  Nurse Practitioners collaborate in the development of policy to influence health services and health public policy including relevant education for team members. 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conducting clinical daily rounds including pain assessment and management of postsurgical patients and nonsurgical acute pain consults abiding by the practice standards for a Nurse Practitioner set out by the College of Nurses of Ontario 2016
  • Work within a collaborative practice model with anesthesiologists and other physicians
  • Manage the daily workload of the acute pain service in collaboration with the anesthesiologist
  • Work with clinical nurse educators to provide orientation and ongoing educational support regarding all aspects of the acute pain service and postoperative pain management to the surgical services clinical staff
  • The NP will assist the interprofessional teams in implementing a plan of care that will enable an overall reduction of length of stay on the inpatient unit as well as engage in strategies to prevent or reduce admission/readmission to Hospital. 

Additional Responsibilities may include:

Direct Comprehensive Care: Obtains and documents a focused health history performs a physical examination on patients requiring pain assessment under the direction of attending anesthesiologist. May be required to assist with pain procedures.

Leadership: Provides leadership in the development implementation and monitoring and evaluation of quality management programs. Participates and provides leadership in the strategic planning process for the delivery of medical care. Assist with policy development and changes relative to the pain service. Supports educational initiatives directed at nursing and allied health to promote and provide medical care that meets best practice standards.

Education: Contributes to the development implementation and evaluation of patient education programs. Conducts educational teaching sessions with patients and/or families with a focus on health promotion disease prevention and impact of illness experience on the patient and family.

Research: Encourages supports and facilitates the development of researchable questions in clinical practice. Participates in quality assurance projects related to pain management.

Consultation: Provides consultation internally and externally for clinical practice issues for review with attending anesthesiologist and as per NP scope of practice.


Qualifications :

Current registration in the Extended Class Nurse Practitioner with the College of Nurses of Ontario required (with no restrictions).

    • Current registration in the Extended Class (Nurse Practitioner) with the College of Nurses of Ontario required (with no restrictions).
    • Completion of a Master Degree in Nursing required.
    • Recent experience with surgical patients or outpatient clinic preferred.
    • Knowledge and clinical expertise in care of the acute postsurgical patients and pain management nursing
    • Eligibility for crossappointment to an academic institution preferred.
    • Membership in specialty related organizations e.g. NPAO RNAO required
    • Demonstrated core competencies as described in the Canadian Nurse Practitioner Core Competency Framework
    • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.  Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with patients families colleagues and other health professionals
    • Identifies and creates a positive learning environment and creating resources as needed for patients families and staff
    • Effectively manages sensitive issues with patients families and the health care team
    • Facilitates learning and acts as a mentor for interprofessional team members
    • Current BCLS Required.  ACLS is preferred
    • Innovative creative and professional role model 
    • Demonstrated ability to prioritize/organize multiple demands and meet strict deadlines
    • Proven problemsolving and criticalthinking skills
    • Ability to work in a collaborative interprofessional healthcare environment with all members of the health care team.
    • Ability to work independently with individuals and groups effectively
    • Ability to work autonomously under the guidance of an anesthesiologist
    • Advocates for and participates in creating an organizational environment that supports safe client care collaborative practice and professional growth
    • Program planning and evaluation methodology skills
    • Participates in quality assurance audits of the acute pain service
    • Proficient with Microsoft Office applications including Outlook Word Excel PowerPoint and Visio required.
    • Ability to meet the physical demands of the position.
    • Demonstrated continual learner
    • Fluent in English (comprehension reading writing and speaking)
    • Knowledge of another language is considered an asset
    • Satisfactory employment and attendance record required


Additional Information :

Hours: Monday to Friday days 081700 subject to change based on operational demands

Site: Milton (trisite coverage based on operational demands)

Salary:  $58.80 to $72.01 per hour
