The New York City Department of Correction (DOC) is an integral part of the Citys evolving criminal justice system participating in reform initiatives and strategies aimed to move the City towards a smaller jail system without compromising public safety. The DOC is responsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment for our employees visitors volunteers and people in our custody. Importantly safe jails enable DOC to provide people in custody with the tools and opportunities they need to successfully reenter their communities. The DOC operates facilities and court commands across the five boroughs with more than 7500 diverse professionals and knowledgeable experts.
The Department of Corrections Canine (K9 Unit is dedicated to maintaining safe and secure facilities by detecting various forms of contraband. Along with detecting contraband the K9 Unit is also utilized to assist with preventing crime deterring escapes searching for and apprehending escapees patrolling facilities and assisting during emergencies. Our paramount objective is to serve the Department in an effective and productive manner through handson management and continued motivation of supervisory and nonsupervisory staff. The selected interns will be responsible for assisting the unit with administrative task associated with Canine Unit:
Assist with administrative/clerical duties.
Assist with tracking reviewing and organizing Unusual Incident (COD) packages.
Prepare maintain and distribute the master weekly and daily schedule and staff squads.
Track update and maintain vehicle information.
Schedule training and maintain training statistics/database.
Generate daily weekly and monthly reports and statistics.
Generate and maintain all facility information system (F.I.S. documentation and statistics.
Assist with inventory audits data entry responding to emails and communicating via radio with staff and supervisors in real time.
PREFERRED SKILLS
Possess great communication and interpersonal skills and detailoriented; Computer Literate knowledge of excel word applications dataentry possess basic Microsoft Outlook knowledge. Learning objectives include an Interest of study in law a plus (i.e. criminal justice) statistical studies or public administration.

Qualifications :
As of June of the Program year the prospective interne must be a student matriculated in a college or be a recent college graduate (winter/spring term of the Program year).
NOTE: Appointment to this title is only valid for the duration of the Program June August each year.
