The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) enriches the environment and protects public health for all New Yorkers by providing 1.1 billion gallons of highquality drinking water managing wastewater and stormwater and reducing air noise and hazardous materials pollution. DEP is the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the country with nearly 6000 employees. DEPs water supply system is comprised of 19 reservoirs and 3 controlled lakes throughout the systems 2000 square mile watershed that extends 125 miles north and west of the City.
The Bureau of Wastewater Treatment (BWT) is responsible for the operation and maintenance of all facilities related to the treatment of sewage within the five boroughs of the City. This includes 14 Wastewater Resource Recovery Facilities (WRRFs) sludge dewatering facilities collections facilities (pumping stations combined sewer overflow retention facilities regulators tide gates etc.) wastewater laboratories and harbor vessels. The collection system includes 497 sewer regulators 152 miles of intercepting sewers 96 pumping systems 3 CSO storage facilities and 3 aeration facilities.
The Division of Laboratory Services mission is to support the operations of the 14 WRRFs by performing the quasi totality of the analytical testing needed by the WRRFs for compliance and process control purposes. Specifically the division is comprised of five laboratories performing microbiological and chemical testing.
All five laboratories are responsible for samples analysis report preparation sampling containers preparation and Quality Assurance/Quality Control to meet EPA requirements and all other regulatory requirements.
The selected candidates for the Division of Laboratory Services will be assigned some of or all the following tasks:
Lab Work With training an intern could perform some portions of laboratory processing.
Data Entry / data review.
Sampling container preparation
Sample reception tasks
Assistance with quality assurance tasks
Research always looking to keep current so the intern could assist with researching literature.

Qualifications :
As of June of the Program year the prospective interne must be a student matriculated in a college or be a recent college graduate (winter/spring term of the Program year).
NOTE: Appointment to this title is only valid for the duration of the Program June August each year.
