My Clients offer expertise in computational fluid dynamics FEA engineering dynamics stress analysis and structural calculations.
The tasks required of the Engineer are as follows but note that proficiency in all areas is not necessary before progression to Senior level:
A) Technical
1. Decide the best approach to solving an engineering problem.
2. Model structures and components in order to determine and understand their behaviour under load.
3. Prepare free body diagrams.
4. Calculate deflections stresses strains and vibration characteristics etc. for use in structural fatigue or creep analyses.
5. Model fluid flow around/through/across solid bodies.
6. Calculate fluid velocities pressure drops drag forces etc.
7. Model heat transfer in order to calculate temperatures power loss etc.
8. Prepare design concepts and model these.
9. Be aware of and develop the knowledge required to use a variety of tools e.g. Mathcad ANSYS Workbench ANSYS Classic ANSYS CFX STAAD Orcaflex Excel Pro Engineer etc.
10. Make recommendations for improving designs so that they meet their specifications for mechanical integrity performance cost weight etc.
11. Prepare clear and concise reports which demonstrate compliance (or otherwise) with the customers and/or regularity requirements. Present these to the customer with the support of more senior engineers.
B) Project
1. Take ownership of and responsibility for your analysis or design activity.
2. If working alone as the Lead Engineer you are responsible for delivering a project which meets (at least) the customer expectations in terms of specification quality and timeliness.
3. Prepare Analysis Plans (or Design Specifications) and get these approved by the customer prior to commencing analytical or design activity.
4. Ensure there is a plan to address areas of uncertainty/ambiguity and follow this up until resolution.
5. Be responsible for organising the checking and approval of your work and for issuing your final reports.
6. Monitor hours used on the project and check this against the tasks completed. Identify if progress is not going to plan and raise this with the Lead Engineer (if you are reporting to one) or the Project Manager (if you are not).
7. Advise the Lead Engineer or Team Leader of any hardwarerelated or softwarerelated resource constraints.
8. Prepare for design reviews as required by the PDL management team.
9. Ensure all documents and models are stored in the correct places prior to checking approving and archiving.
C) People
1. Maintain good working relationships and communications within PDL to ensure the efficient delivery of the engineering work.
2. Organise your own time effectively.
3. Advise Lead Engineer or Engineering Team Leader of any peoplerelated resource constraints.
4. Be willing to get involved in a range of nonengineering tasks as required by the business e.g. IT health and safety first aid being a fire warden sustainability etc.
5. Help new starters understand PDL procedures filing structures and how to use the most common tools.
6. Someone working at Engineer level would not normally be expected to be supervising a team of engineers however if this is the case please see Senior Engineer.
D) Quality and Safety
1. Ensure adherence to the PDL Quality Management System including in particular the verification and validation procedures.

E) Sales and Marketing
1. Collate customer requirements usually facetoface although remote contact can be used once a relationship has been established.
2. Maintain regular at least weekly contact with customers throughout the project and respond (at some level) to all queries on the day they are raised.
