About the role Substitute Teachers play a crucial role in the smooth functioning of daily school operations. While substitute teachers may not have the same long-term presen ce as regular classroom teachers, they serve as the reliable and flexible backbone of our education system, ensuring the continuity of delivery of curriculum, serving student needs in a variety of ways, and maintaining a consistent academic environment. At Epiphany School, we deeply appreciate our substitutes and rely on them to step in, often at a moment’s notice, to ensure the school can continue to function effectively in the face of planned or unplanned absences, so our teachers can tend to their or their family’s needs, attend professional development opportunities, or deal with unforeseen circumstances. Substitute schedules can vary, but a typical start time for a full-day placement begins at 8:00am and ends at 3:30pm. Typical start time for an Extended Day placement begins at 3:00pm and ends at 6:00pm. Our substitutes sit within our Academic Programs department, reports into & communicates directly with our Front Office Coordinator for sub placement opportunities. What you'll do Our substitutes have the opportunity to sub in a range of placements depending on their knowledge, skills, and abilities, availability, and personal preferences. Placements include lead grade-level teaching roles, lead specialist teaching roles, instructional support roles, or Extended Day program teaching roles. Substitute Teachers are expected to collaborate with staff to manage classroom routines, ensure a smooth educational experience while following curriculum plans and approaching behavior challenges through the lens of Responsive Classroom strategies, and providing a summary of what happened in the classroom(s) so the teacher(s) can review upon their return. While the school strives to place substitutes well in advance, we do reach out with last-minute placement requests. Qualifications The ideal candidates for this role bring the typical knowledge, skills, and abilities: Committed to upholding our school values and contributing to a welcoming, inclusive environment for all is expected Excellent interpersonal and conflict resolution skills required Must be proactive and have the ability to work independently and collaboratively as a team member Must be committed to student and family confidentiality Excellent oral, written, and presentational skills in the English language is required; fluency in additional languages a plus Adaptable & able to work in a dynamic environment is required Strong organizational and time management skills is required Ability to balance competing priorities while maintaining excellent attention to detail is required Ability to remain calm and rational in emotionally heightened situations required Fluency in MSFT Suite programs is required Classroom management skills is strongly preferred Interested in and brings experience working with students in grades Pre-K through 5 is strongly preferred Feels comfortable subbing in a range of roles and classrooms is preferred Knowledgeable in childhood developmental stages for ages 4 - 11 preferred Bachelor's degree in Education, Curriculum and Instruction, or related field or a combination of education and experience is preferred, but not required Teaching certificate is preferred, but not required Compensation & Benefits The hourly rate for this role is $29.00 for non-certified teachers and $33.00 for certified teachers. Due to the part-time and/or ad hoc nature of the substitute teacher role, this is not a benefits-eligible position. Substitute teachers do accrue paid sick and safe time based on the City of Seattle law. 1 hour of paid sick and safe time is accrued per every 40 hours worked. They also have access to our Employee Assistance Program resources.
