The IDEAL School of Manhattan

The IDEAL School of Manhattan is an inclusion school dedicated to creating a diverse community that affirms and accepts the full identities of all people, while inspiring academic excellence, creative leadership, and a desire to build a more just and equitable world.

Middle and High School Math Teacher

The IDEAL School of Manhattan is seeking a talented, enthusiastic, and creative Middle and High School math teacher with experience in special education for a full-time, classroom position starting in August 2023.

IDEAL teachers are charged with inspiring students in an inclusive and nurturing learning community to achieve personal and academic excellence. This math special teacher will teach four Middle and High School math classes that range in level from sixth grade math to calculus, which IDEAL offers in some years. IDEAL expands the definition of diversity to include ability, and thus candidates should demonstrate the ability to teach a range of learners and to scaffold lessons with note-taking guides, visual aids, and other supports to promote the success of a range of learners.

All IDEAL teachers also serve as advisors and contribute in significant ways beyond the classroom; it is the norm for teachers to mentor a club, provide extra help, chaperone overnight class trips, and lead their own extra-curricular activities and initiatives. They know their students as learners and as individuals, and they inspire their students by setting a high bar for excellence while making the classroom fun, developing real-world projects, and supporting all learners in achieving. In short, they adore and believe in their students and, in turn, are admired and respected by their students.

The successful candidate will work effectively with Middle and High School students; partner thoughtfully with colleagues and parents; demonstrate the ability to inspire students to strive for both personal and academic excellence; and possess a commitment to inclusive education.

  • Appreciation for the school s mission and commitment to social justice
  • A strong understanding of differentiation

  • An affinity for helping students apply math skills across disciplines and in real-world situations
  • The ability to collaborate as a part of a team
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • A desire to make a difference in the school--to contribute time and talent outside of the classroom to the growth of students and the school

Requirements

  • Master s degree in special education, math or a related field required
  • Three years experience
  • Independent school experience is preferred but not essential
