Description

In an environment of continuous quality improvement the Histotechnician is responsible for performing histology and cytology preparation procedures on patient specimens submitted for the diagnoses of disease. The Histotechnician/MLT maintains specimen identity and integrity produces high quality stained slides using standardized procedures to meet the Pathologists requirements for microscopic evaluation and performs quality control and preventative maintenance according to established policy. The Histotechnician/MLT works independently organizing work to meet established policy and deadlines. This position interacts with patient populations from neonate to elderly; with patients of all types of illnesses. Exhibits the MHS Standards of Excellence and exercises strict confidentiality at all times.

Job Functions:

  1. Performs histology and cytology (GYN and non-GYN) preparation procedures on patient specimens submitted for the diagnoses of disease.
  2. Maintains specimen identity and integrity; produces high quality stained slides using standardized procedures to meet the Pathologists requirements for microscopic evaluation.
  3. Performs high quality control and preventative maintenance according to established policy.
  4. Reviews and signs all electronic document control records as assigned.
  5. Assists with Frozen sections as needed.
  6. Works independently organizing work to meet established deadlines.
  7. Interacts with patient populations from neonate to elderly.
  8. Assumes all other duties and responsibilities as necessary.

Qualifications

Minimum Education/Experience Required:

  • Histotechnologist Medical Laboratory Technologist an Associate of Applied Science or Arts degree or minimum of 2 years of on-the-job training in a clinical Histology setting.
  • Nations Board of Certification preferred.
  • Experience may be required based upon education and training.
  • The incumbent may require up to 3 months of full time detailed job orientation and training to gain specific capabilities to perform essential job functions.

Special Knowledge Skills Training:

  • Must demonstrate knowledge of basic science skills medical terminology and technical proficiency in the histological techniques.
  • Troubleshoot with all levels of personnel.
  • The staff member must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on his/her unit.

Compensation Details: Education experience and tenure may be considered along with internal equity when job offers are extended.
