Summary Description

The Reserve Deputy Sheriff under supervision as outlined in Iowa Code Chapter 80D performs law enforcement and crime prevention duties for the patrol to the Support Services Commander and receives lead-work supervision from a sergeant or senior deputy on duty. A reserve deputy is avolunteer sworn peace officer with similar duties and responsibilities as a full-time peace officer.

  4. A competitive written examination will be administered on Saturday December 20 2025 at 8:00 am followed by a physical agility test. Location TBD.Standards of testing may be foundPhysical Testing Standards - ILEA.
  5. All applicants will be invited to test. Wear appropriate clothing to participate in the physical agility test.

Job Duties/Responsibilities

Assignments may vary from position to position; however the following are typical duties:

  • Operates a patrol vehicle and patrols a designated area of the county to preserve the peace to prevent criminal violations and to enforce laws and ordinances; protects persons in immediate danger of injury or death; gives first aid to victims of injury or illness as needed.
  • Provides traffic enforcement issues warnings and citations and arrests drunk drivers; investigates crimes and questions witnesses; arrests or assists in the arrest of suspects with or without a warrant; obtains and preserves evidence; directs traffic.
  • Receives responds and resolves or processes complaints such as domestic abuse; restores and maintains order with regard to family and personal domestic crises; serves legal papers such as summons writs of attachment executions restitution court orders official notices and subpoenas; assists in the execution of search warrants; delivers death and emergency messages in the absence of a supervisor.
  • Investigates accidents and administers first aid to victims; assists ambulance fire department and wrecker personnel with traffic direction as needed; assists medical examiner conduct investigations; requests emergency evacuation and assistance in disasters; provides emergency transportation of medical supplies to elderly and disabled; delivers emergency blood between area hospitals; investigates reports of missing persons and vehicles.
  • Transports jail inmates to/from state institutions and to/from court and hospitals when needed; transports mental patients to/from state institutions committal centers and court; Assists in picking up prisoners extradited from other states.
  • Conducts routine tavern checks; checks business doors for security during closed hours; locks the area post office; provides residential security checks for citizens on vacation or other absences from their homes; provides security at railroad derailment sites; assists other agencies in providing protection for visiting dignitaries; responds to alarms such as at banks businesses and residences.
  • Checks vehicles parked along open roads determines if they are stolen and requests a tow if they are a traffic hazard; assists disabled and/or stranded motorists obtain help; conducts vehicle inspections for the public on salvage vehicles.
  • Provides security at university and contract town sporting events and community functions; escorts special events such as bicyclists and runners that pass through the county; provides traffic control for funeral procession; acts in a ceremonial role at events such as parades.
  • Fingerprints children for identification purposes; assists juvenile authorities with juvenile offenders and children in need of assistance.
  • Attends local state and national job related training sessions as may be assigned; implements techniques designed to prevent crime.
  • Delivers job related presentations at public speaking engagements for groups such as schools clubs citizens academy classes and service organizations.
  • Assists other law enforcement agencies conduct investigations; conducts special investigations at the request of the county attorney and ordered by the sheriff; assists in disaster operations.
  • Responds and processes animal control complaints in emergency situations or when the animal control officer is not available.
  • Provides courtroom security; appears in court presents evidence and testifies in criminal cases.
  • Prepares evidence for issuing complaints; serves warrants prepares related reports testifies in criminal and civil court when called upon.
  • Prepares written reports on work related issues such as complaints investigations and arrests.
  • May function in an on-call status as needed; may be requested to work day evening or night shift and alternate between shifts; may be requested to work holidays and weekends.

Performs other duties as assigned by the Sheriff or designee.

Qualifications

A reserve deputy is avolunteer sworn peace officer with similar duties and responsibilities as a full-time peace officer. To be eligible an applicant must be at least eighteen years old and live close enough to respond within forty five minutes to the Story County Sheriffs Office. Applicant must have the ability to read write and perform basic mathematic calculations which would normally be acquired through secondary education or through equivalent experience. High School Diploma or equivalent required. Applicants must successfully pass a physical agility test written examination and be able to perform strenuous physical tasks under stress. An oral interview and background investigation including drivers license and criminal history check will be conducted along with the MMPI psychological profile pre-employment physical eye examination and hearing test.

Physical & Environmental Characteristics

Good physical condition is required. Much of the time the employee exerts ordinary physical effort such as walking standing and sitting. Uses occasional force at the scene of events such as making arrests; uses and cares for firearm vehicles and other police related equipment. Exposure to a number of disagreeable elements such as cold ice snow heat wet traffic accidents homicides and suicides. Ongoing exposure to permanent disability or death from law enforcement duties. Stress in dealing with sometimes hostile people. May required out of state travel.
