The Museum of Modern Art is currently accepting applications for a Projectionist. The Projectionist provides expert support for the Museums film screenings exhibitions and events. The position centers on film projection and archival handling with additional responsibility for maintaining and operating audio-visual systems throughout the Museum.
Responsibilities:
- Inspects repairs and handles archival and contemporary film prints with the highest professional standards.
- Operates 16mm and 35mm changeover projectors in a theatrical or screening-room environment.
- Maintains and performs preventive and corrective service on Kinoton projectors Christie digital projectors and other playback equipment.
- Manages film and digital screenings including format conversions sound calibration and system checks.
- Collaborates with curators filmmakers and visiting technicians to realize screenings as intended clearly explaining technical issues in nontechnical language when needed.
- Sets up and operates audio systems including wireless microphones analog mixers EQ and compression for screenings and film-related events.
- Operates PTZ cameras and assist with media management and sound-for-video documentation when required.
- Provides AV support for Museum events such as talks premieres conferences and live performances.
- Assists with the installation troubleshooting and maintenance of projection and AV components in exhibitions.
- Maintains accurate documentation of projection systems film handling procedures and maintenance activities.
Requirements:
- Proven experience with archival film projection and changeover operation.
- Strong knowledge of film inspection techniques film sound formats and projection booth safety.
- Familiarity with digital cinema workflows including DCP creation playback and projector operation.
- Solid computer skills and comfort with networked AV systems.
- Experience with live sound mixing lighting control video playback systems and commercial display hardware.
- Ability to balance multiple screenings and events in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with excellent communication skills.
- Self-motivated and detail-oriented with a strong commitment to presentation quality and preservation standards.
- Must be willing to take and pass The Museum of Modern Arts Online Projectionist Training Module.
Preferred Certifications Skills and/or Knowledge:
- Project management or electronics certifications (Crestron AMX or similar).
- Documented hands-on experience in projection system maintenance and repair.
- Basic carpentry for mounting and installation of projection and display equipment.
- Soldering and cable termination skills.
Software Proficiencies:
Apple QuickTime Microsoft Office (Word Excel PowerPoint) Adobe Creative Cloud Final Cut Pro Pro Tools Vectorworks or CAD Isadora Watchout QLab Max/MSP/Jitter.
Other Requirements:
- MoMA participates in the TSAs Certified Cargo Screening Facility Program. Therefore if hired individual must successfully complete a security threat assessment through the Department of Homeland Security in order to participate.
- This is a unionized position at MoMA with covered employees represented by IATSE Local 306. Candidate hired must be a member of Local 306 or become a member of Local 306 post-hire.
