About us
The Queensland Fire Department (QFD) provides fire prevention preparedness and response services to fire in the built and landscape environments as well as scientific and specialist capabilities to Queensland communities. The QFD provides a multi-hazard emergency response including road crash rescue bushfire hazardous material technical and vertical rescue severe weather incidents remote and swiftwater rescue and provides a number of functions supporting community safety outcomes.
The department encompasses Queensland Fire and Rescue (QFR) Rural Fire Service Queensland (RFSQ) as well as the broader department which work together to pre-empt prevent mitigate and manage the consequences of fires and other emergencies on Queensland communities and support our large volunteer membership across the state.

Purpose of role
The QFD Information and Technology Directorate support the departments operations and organisational capability by facilitating developing and managing technological solutions and initiatives. As part of delivering quality services our vision is to make Information Communication and Technology (ICT) simplified smarter connected and user-friendly. Our teams are responsible for ICT investments governance portfolio projects and assurance activities including the implementation of transformation programs through IT planning change management and advice and provisioning of reliable secure and fit-for-purpose IT solutions that achieve optimal outcomes and enable operational front line and corporate services to deliver on their capabilities and organisational objectives.
As the Senior Data Analyst you will be responsible for ensuring the effective management governance and utilisation of data across the department. This role will focus on adherence to the Data Management Body of Knowledge (DMBOK) framework ensuring that data is handled reported and governed correctly to support organisational goals. You will work closely with projects stakeholders and teams and play a critical role in supporting the departments strategic objectives to ensure the appropriate use of data data integrity compliance with governance standards and the delivery of high-quality insights that drive informed decision-making in line with best practices in data management and governance.
Key requirements
Highly desirable requirements
- A bachelors degree in data science information management computer science or a related field. An advanced degree is advantageous.
- Certification or formal training in data governance data analytics or related fields (e.g. DAMA Certified Data Management Professional (CDMP) Microsoft Certified: Data Analyst Associate).
- Strong understanding of the DMBOK framework and its application in organisational contexts.
- Minimum 2 years of professional experience in data analysis data governance or data management roles.
- Proficiency in data analysis tools and platforms (e.g. SQL Python R Power BI Tableau).
- Familiarity with data governance principles including compliance with the Information Privacy Act 2009 (QLD) and other relevant regulatory frameworks.
- Experience working with data quality assurance processes metadata management and data lifecycle management.
- Experience in Agile way of working and appropriate requirement management tools.
Your key accountabilities
Your part in the ongoing success of our department in supporting frontline services will see you responsible for a variety of work including but not limited to:
- Perform data analysis activities and ensure adherence to the DMBOK framework and other relevant data governance standards across the department including to monitor compliance with data privacy and security regulations in accordance with the Information Privacy Act 2009 (QLD).
- Conduct regular data quality assessments to identify and resolve inconsistencies inaccuracies and gaps in data sets maintaining metadata repositories and ensure proper documentation of all departmental data assets.
- Review and interpret complex data sets to develop and deliver insightful reports dashboards and visualisations and presentations to support effective decision-making and provide regular updates on data governance initiatives to ensure stakeholders understand their roles and responsibilities.
- Conduct quality reviews of project and support deliverables and collaborate with project teams to analyse data requirements and ensure the correct handling use and reporting of data against the QFD Data Enablement plan.
- Build and maintain effective working relationships and liaise with internal and external stakeholders to provide guidance in the conduct of data management governance policies procedures and best practice.
- Oversee the data lifecycle of data assets from creation and storage to archiving and disposal ensuring compliance with governance policies.
- Support the implementation of data management tools and technologies to improve data handling and governance processes and promote a culture of data literacy and governance across the department by developing training materials and conducting workshops.
- Undertake investigative work and utilise appropriate modelling techniques to identify opportunities to improve data management practices and processes ensuring alignment with departmental goals.
