The Department of Pathology is seeking a Staff Nurse to provide specialized care to blood donors and patients in a highly regulated environment. Perform work that involves numerous steps and techniques that require the use of professional judgment. Operate cell separators and other equipment while caring for donors undergoing apheresis procedures. Supervise designated laboratory staff as directed.

This position is 50% time primarily Monday Friday with occasional weekends. Options for 8- or 10-hour shifts between 0700 and 1930.

Duties to include:

Screens prospective whole blood and apheresis donors and performs physical examination of the donor using standard interview forms and/or donor computer software.

Obtains donor samples for determination of laboratory values. Draws pretest retest and other blood samples as assigned.

Performs phlebotomy drawing whole blood units.

May participate in off-site blood collection.

Performs record keeping and data collection using manual and computer methods.

An Associates Degree in Nursing a Diploma in Nursing a Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing Professional Masters of Nursing and Healthcare Practice (MNHP) MSN/Clinical Nurse Leader or a Masters Degree in Nursing (MSN MA) is required.

Current license to practice professional nursing in Iowa.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.

Demonstrates excellent interpersonal skills with blood donors patients families nursing staff and interdisciplinary team members as demonstrated through written and verbal interactions.

General computer skills are required.

Proven capacity to function with a high degree of autonomy while actively collaborating within a multi-disciplinary team.

Excellent organization skills and ability to multi-task.

Desirable Qualifications:

1-3 years acute care nursing experience.

Previous experience using electronic medical records.

Knowledge of university policies and procedures.

Experience working in a blood donor or apheresis center.

Experience using highly specialized medical equipment.
