The Department of Curriculum and Instruction in the College of Education and Professional Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater seeks a tenure-track faculty member in the area of Secondary Language Arts Education beginning August 2026.
This is a full-time position with responsibilities for teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in the licensable program area for English and Language Arts research and service to the university community and profession. Research and teaching expertise should complement existing faculty expertise and reflect knowledge and experience aligned with current NCTE guidelines and statements from the National Council for the Teaching of English (NCTE). Specific consideration will be given to candidates with knowledge of sociolinguistics transnational multiliteracies Indigenous and land-based pedagogies and literacy practices critical literacies or digital and media literacies. Successful candidates must show proven commitments to preparing teachers to serve learners with a wide range of linguistic cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds.
Job Details:
The successful candidate will be able to teach secondary language arts teaching methods courses and courses within the undergraduate English and Language Arts teaching license program. The candidate will also be expected to pursue an active research agenda that results in publications or presentations and contributes to advancing the department university the profession and society. The candidate will also be expected to participate in service activities and embrace the principles of inclusiveness and belonging as a member of the university community. Candidates who do interdisciplinary scholarship and teaching of literacy and language arts are encouraged to apply. This includes but is not limited to: critical and anti-oppressive language arts education critical and transnational multiliteracies translanguaging ethnic studies disability studies-informed approaches to culturally sustaining education community-driven education Indigenous and land-based pedagogies and literacy practices digital literacies (including but not limited to the critical study and use of AI in English and Language Arts education) literacy policy or neurodiversity.
Responsibilities:
Full-time teaching responsibilities include methods and other preparatory courses for teaching middle and high school English and Language Arts and writing possible reading/literacy courses advising undergraduate students and supervision of clinical placements. Research expectations include publications and presentations and are explicitly outlined in the tenure and promotion guidelines provided to tenure-track addition faculty members serve as advisors/mentors to students and are encouraged to engage students in undergraduate research or other scholarly and creative activities. Service responsibilities include committee service at the departmental college and university levels as well as participation in community organizations and the discipline as relevant to the candidates expertise and interest. Faculty at UW-Whitewater may be required to teach online and/or hybrid classes evening and/or weekend classes and provide service to the university and the local community in a variety of modalities including mentoring students and providing professional development for colleagues schools and community groups.
All students faculty and staff are expected to ensure their materials are digitally accessible and utilize standard technology platforms supported by UW-Whitewater. Examples include but are not limited to Navigate Canvas and Microsoft Office applications including Outlook which is essential for university email communications and scheduling.

The College of Education and Professional Studies prepares the largest number of teachers in Wisconsin among 33 institutions. More than 2200 students are enrolled in seven departments: Communication Sciences & Disorders; Counselor Education; Curriculum and Instruction; Educational Foundations; Kinesiology; Leadership Military Science and Aerospace Studies; and Special Education.
Within the College there are over 100 faculty and instructional academic staff members of which 90% have earned addition to teaching and research obligations faculty and staff are actively involved in professional and specialty organizations.

Required Qualifications:
Ph.D. or other terminal degree in English and Language Arts Education Literacy Education or a closely related field. (ABD candidates may apply but must have their degree completed by the contract start date in August 2026. If not they will be hired on a one-year contract with the understanding that their degree will be completed before January 2027 in advance of their first scheduled review.)
Demonstrated excellence in teaching with an emphasis on promoting the success of students.
Clear evidence of scholarly potential.
Minimum of three years of teaching experience in K-12 schools.
Wisconsin licensure or the equivalent preparation background to teach English and Language Arts.
Demonstrated commitment to educational justice sociolinguistic and sociocultural justice.
Demonstrated knowledge of current NCTE statements and guidelines for the preparation of teachers.
Preferred Qualifications:
Demonstrated commitment to the preparation of teachers grounded in humanizing linguistically and culturally sustaining education.
Experience with teaching preparation and clinical supervision.
Commitment to academic freedom.
Demonstrated skills of collaborating to work with cross-departmental teams community partners and/or community-based learning.
Expressed view of how they navigate education policies in relationship to teacher preparation their research and scholarship or their service to communities and the field.
Expressed interdisciplinary approach to English and Language Arts and Literacy education.
Ability to teach reading/literacy courses.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
Ability to interact respectfully with people from diverse socioeconomic cultural and ethnic backgrounds.
