JOB SUMMARY

Under occasional supervision the Road Patrol Sergeant serves as a command staff officer and leads the Road Patrol and Courtesy Services Divisions of the Columbia College Police Department. The position is responsible for supervising officers ensuring the safety and security of students faculty staff and visitors and enforcing College rules regulations and applicable local state and federal laws. The Sergeant responds to routine and emergency police situations assists with departmental training and ensures compliance with training policies and procedures as required by the State of South Carolina.

Qualifications

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Patrol and Law Enforcement

  • Command and supervise all officers assigned to the Road Patrol and Courtesy Services Divisions.
  • Conduct routine patrols of campus property respond to emergency calls and enforce laws and regulations.
  • Manage and respond to incidents including disturbances traffic accidents stranded motorists and security escorts.
  • Apprehend and arrest suspects; issue citations warrants and parking violations.
  • Secure crime scenes and assist in criminal investigations.
  • Collaborate with local state and federal agencies (e.g. SLED FBI) on special investigations and events.

Training and Supervision

  • Assist the Lieutenant and Training Sergeant with supervision and training of personnel.
  • Ensure all departmental training meets South Carolina state standards.
  • Participate in and lead ongoing professional development and required physical fitness activities.
  • Ensure officers maintain required training certifications and firearms proficiency.

Emergency Response and Security

  • Respond to emergency and high-risk situations; implement the College Security Plan and emergency protocols.
  • Provide protective services for visiting dignitaries and special events.
  • Maintain readiness to respond to on-call emergencies at all times.

Reporting and Administration

  • Prepare accurate and timely incident reports accident reports warrants and related documentation.
  • Maintain effective communication with College administrators law enforcement agencies emergency responders and the community.
  • Oversee proper use and maintenance of departmental vehicles equipment and technology.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Completion of required training and certification at the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy.
  • Four (4) years of progressive law enforcement experience.
  • NCIC certification (or ability to obtain); additional certifications may be required.
  • Valid state drivers license.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Strong knowledge of police procedures safety protocols and applicable laws.
  • Proven ability to lead and supervise personnel effectively.
  • Ability to remain calm and exercise sound judgment in high-stress situations.
  • Skilled in operating police equipment vehicles firearms and communication tools.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to build and maintain positive relationships with campus and community partners.
  • Physical ability to lift carry run and defend oneself as required by law enforcement duties.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Ability to operate various law enforcement and office equipment.
  • Ability to exert up to 30 pounds of force occasionally and to walk run climb or restrain individuals as needed.
  • Ability to work under potentially dangerous conditions and respond to emergencies promptly.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Work environment risks exposure to no known environmental hazards. This position may involve exposure to high-stress or hazardous situations. The Sergeant must be adaptable professional and committed to maintaining the safety and security of the campus community.
