Chess Coach Part time

The Stony Brook School seeks a Chess Coach for the winter season to supervise practices coordinate matches and foster a positive student-led environment that promotes learning teamwork and sportsmanship.

Department: Athletics Compensation: $3000 stipend (paid biweekly)

Reports To: Director of Athletics Season: Winter Schedule: Monday-Friday approximately 3:45 p.m. - 5:15 p.m.

Start/End Dates: November 3 2025 - March 5 2026 concludes with the county championship)

Key Responsibilities

• Supervise daily practices ensuring a structured engaging and supportive environment.
• Record results of student-led matches and maintain accurate participation records.
• Coordinate and attend all competitions - typically six matches (three home three away) and one county championship held on a Saturday in Hauppauge.
• Drive the team to and from away matches.
• Encourage teamwork sportsmanship and strategic growth among players.
• Optional: Provide instruction or coaching as desired - students are largely self-directed and peer-taught.
• Ensure adherence to school policies and represent the school positively at all events.

Schedule and Season Details

• Practices run Monday through Friday 3:45-5:15 p.m. (students may leave once matches conclude).
• Fridays often feature informal or recreational chess activities.
• No matches or practices are held during school breaks or holidays.
• The season typically concludes with the county championship in early February.

Qualifications

• Experience working with students or extracurricular programs preferred.
• Strong organizational and communication skills.
• Valid drivers license required
• Knowledge of or interest in Chess preferred
