Fractional CFO

Remote (U.S.-Based) Contract $150 $300/hour (Part-Time 620 hrs/week)
Provide strategic financial leadership ensure nonprofit compliance and guide a growing mission-driven organization toward long-term sustainability.

A national nonprofit organization is seeking an experienced Fractional Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to serve as a trusted financial advisor to leadership and the board. This role will oversee strategic financial planning compliance reporting and systems optimization to strengthen operational efficiency and financial sustainability.

This is a remote contract role open to candidates anywhere in the United States.


Position Overview

The Fractional CFO will partner closely with the executive team and board finance committee to ensure the organizations financial health transparency and compliance with nonprofit best practices. This role is ideal for a mission-driven finance professional who thrives in a dynamic collaborative environment and enjoys both strategic planning and hands-on problem-solving.


Key Responsibilities

Financial Strategy & Oversight

  • Develop and manage annual budgets multi-year forecasts and cash flow models.

  • Provide financial insights and recommendations to inform strategic decisions.

  • Support leadership in developing sustainable financial and funding strategies.

  • Present clear and actionable financial reports to the board and finance committee.

Accounting & Compliance

  • Ensure GAAP and 501(c)(3) compliance including oversight of Form 990 and annual audit or financial review.

  • Supervise or review bookkeeping payroll and AP/AR functions.

  • Maintain strong internal controls and ensure audit readiness.

  • Collaborate with external accountants and auditors to ensure accuracy and timeliness.

Grant & Fund Management

  • Oversee restricted/unrestricted fund tracking and grant compliance.

  • Develop systems for grant budgeting reporting and forecasting.

  • Partner with program teams to align financial tracking with program deliverables.

Systems & Process Improvement

  • Streamline accounting workflows and financial reporting systems.

  • Integrate financial tools with CRM or donor management platforms.

  • Recommend technology and process enhancements to improve accuracy and efficiency.

Board & Leadership Partnership

  • Translate complex financial data into accessible insights for non-finance audiences.

  • Provide regular updates to the Finance Committee and executive leadership.

  • Support board discussions on risk management reserves and sustainability.



Requirements

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in Finance Accounting or related field (Masters or CPA preferred).

  • 5 years of experience in nonprofit financial leadership or CFO roles.

  • Deep understanding of nonprofit accounting fund accounting and GAAP.

  • Proven success managing audits 990 filings and compliance reporting.

  • Strong financial modeling forecasting and scenario planning skills.

  • Proficiency in QuickBooks Online Sage Intacct or equivalent accounting software.

  • Exceptional communication and collaboration skills with cross-functional teams.

Preferred Experience & Skills

  • Experience in financial system implementation or CRM integration.

  • Familiarity with grants management and donor reporting processes.

  • Track record advising small to mid-size nonprofits on strategic finance.

  • Experience presenting to boards or leading finance committees.

Benefits
