Yakima Valley College seeks an innovative College & Career Readiness Instructor committed to community college students and their success. We are an innovative and equity-focused college dedicated to helping all students achieve their academic and professional goals. This is an in person full-time temporary special faculty (non-tenure track) position through Spring 2026 in the College & Career Readiness division teaching Adult Basic Education (ABE) and English Language Acquisition (ELA) with an anticipated start date of January 2 2026 and located at the Grandview campus of YVC.

Essential Tasks

  • Impart excitement and enthusiasm into the teaching of writing reading mathematics and other adult education curricula.
  • Plan implement and monitor instruction for individuals and groups.
  • Accurately complete maintain and submit student and class records as required by the college and department in a timely manner.
  • Communicate effectively in writing and speaking in English with colleagues staff students administrators and others.
  • Work collaboratively with faculty staff students and the public to create a positive classroom environment.
  • Incorporate digital literacy into basic skills classes.
  • Teach to a variety of learning styles as demonstrated in the development of course materials and assessments of student learning.
  • Implement outcomes and competency-based assessment of student learning and program effectiveness.
  • Demonstrate a strong commitment to the mission and values of community college education.
  • Ability or interest in teaching populations diverse in age abilities culture and ethnicity.
  • Assist with the administration of the CASAS test according to department policies.
  • Advise new students using CASAS and other entrance assessment data and advise students transitioning to college.
  • Advise and register students at the end of each quarter.
  • Participate in department division and college committees.
  • Ability to teach current academic standards within contextualized subject areas.
  • Comply with all college state and federal rules regulations and laws.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • An earned Bachelors Degree from an accredited institution of higher education in an Adult Basic Education field or a related field.
  • Demonstrated successful teaching experience in developmental or remedial mathematics or English.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • A graduate degree with significant training in education mathematics English or English Language Acquisition
  • Three years of recent synchronous teaching experience (classroom and/or online) in Mathematics Language Arts or ESL/ELA.
  • A clear commitment to and understanding of the community college and adult education philosophies
  • A demonstrated ability to work successfully with nontraditional students and the adult population including successful problem-solving quick-thinking skills and experience with multi-level groups
  • Experience working with culturally linguistically and ethnically diverse populations
  • A demonstrated competence in effective written and oral communication in English
  • Experience or interest in using a variety of student-centered instructional and assessment techniques
  • Experience or interest in curriculum development and assessment and outcomes-based learning
  • Successful experience advising students developing course material and schedules
  • Education and experience teaching English Language Acquisition
  • A demonstrated commitment in continuing their education through participation/attendance in professional development.
  • Experience using a learning management system to teach online or hybrid classes or hybrid classes
