Fire Science and Maritime Fire Science Instructor Full-Time Position
Job Summary
Under the general supervision of the Associate Vice President of Nursing Allied Health and Public Safety works collaboratively to provide classroom and laboratory instruction as well as academic advising for Fire Science and Maritime Fire Science students.
Essential Duties
- Design and implement instructional activities in classroom and laboratory settings using sound instructional delivery techniques at times that meet the needs of students and supporting agencies including but not limited to the International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) the Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST) the National Fire Protection Association the National Maritime Center the U.S. Fire Administration and the National Wildfire Coordinating Group.
- Provide instruction to students using a variety of methods that may include live online HyFlex and hybrid modalities. Provide instruction that may include practice sessions in the MERTS Fire Science labs live fire training in the Fire Response and Research Center (the Burn Building) and field practice in the local area. Ensure availability to teach for extended periods and at odd hours including early morning nights and weekends.
- Work with faculty colleagues to develop implement evaluate and periodically review and revise the organizing framework learning outcomes program strategic plan program outcome assessments and curriculum of the program including FESHE compliance.
- Develop and implement meaningful evaluation tools of student achievement of identified learning objectives and outcomes and assign grades according to college and departmental policies.
- Provide for student evaluations of teaching and learning effectiveness. These evaluations may include components related to classroom performance and skills competency.
- Provide academic advising to students as per the CBA that may include up to 20 students each term who are pursuing certificates and degrees in emergency services fire science and/or maritime science.
- Participate in determining academic policies and procedures of the institution and other appropriate faculty activities of the College. Serve on college committees as per the CBA as a faculty representative.
- Maintain adequate office hours per the CBA that offer students accessibility to feedback evaluation and support consistently.
- Maintain professional competence and job qualifications. Submit proof of pertinent training and certifications.
- Schedule operate and maintain the fire training facility (Fire Response and Research Center) and equipment while ensuring the safety of students. Accompany students during training and practice in the Fire Response and Research Center and collaborate with the Fire Science Instructional Assistant to ensure safety at all times.
- Market and promote Fire Science and Maritime Fire Science programs at local and regional events including scheduling of events. Participate in recruitment and orientation efforts involving high school and new CCC students.
- Organize and plan quarterly Regional Advisory Committee meetings including developing agendas maintaining membership and scheduling at least three meetings annually.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelors degree and at least three years of verifiable professional work experience in the fire science field; OR Seven (7) years of professional work experience related to fire science. Candidates hired without an associates degree will be required to complete an associates degree within three years after hire date as a condition of continued employment.
- High school diploma or GED.
- Physically able to instruct while wearing Personal Protective Equipment and Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus for extended periods when providing firefighting instruction.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Previous experience teaching at the post-secondary level.
- Associates degree in Fire Science.
- Industry certification (e.g. NFPA or equivalent Firefighter I Instructor I Apparatus Operator Incident CommandICSand 800; USCG/NMC Approved Basic Marine or Advanced Maritime Firefighting).
- Maritime firefighting experience and/or training.
Knowledge
- Knowledge of instructional methods appropriate to student achievement of program learning outcomes in the practice of fire science.
Skills
- Interpersonal communication skills to successfully relate to staff students and the public
- Excellent oral communication and presentation skills
- Excellent written communication skills
- Skill in computer operations including electronic scheduling spreadsheets PowerPoint and word processing applications
- Skill in the development of performance and/or classroom evaluation tools
- Skill in promoting critical thinking in a variety of educational settings
- Skill in utilizing an online learning management system (LMS) such as Canvas
Abilities
- Ability to develop valid and reliable student achievement assessments
- Demonstrated experience in team approaches to problem solving
- Ability to manage time prioritize tasks and organize work to complete assigned duties
Working Conditions
Must be able to tolerate all fire simulation environment conditions: climbing stairs safely operate equipment wearing fire gear working in dark smoky rooms exposure to heat and flames handling water hoses under challenging conditions.
