Position Summary

The Senior Managing Director (SMD) reports to the Territory Executive Director (ED) and assists in setting the plan and strategic direction for the assigned addition they work with the Executive Director on management of the team of development officers as assigned by the Executive Director within the assigned territory.

There are two positions to be filled one within the Central territory and one in the West territory.

Job Description

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

  • The SMD will supervise up to twelve (12) development officers including assignment movement and evaluation of prospect portfolios. Supports and holds gift officers accountable for their annual metrics. Consults with AVC/IG & ED on hiring and promotions of gift officers within their territory.
  • Assists the ED in overseeing and coordinating the entire fundraising in their territory including principal gifts planned giving and individual giving. The SMD position will be evaluated on achieving the total territory metrics and talent development.
  • The SMD will help to create and foster a culture of collaboration and teamwork that celebrates outcomes builds individual and team capacity and ensures that WashU UA is a preferred workplace.
  • Direct reports include a team of Development Officers Senior Development Officers Directors of Advancement and Senior Directors of Advancement as assigned.
  • Manages a small donor caseload (no more than 10) and some travel is expected within assigned territory for development officer support and events.
  • Assists the ED in executing the annual fundraising strategy for their territory and ensures frontline fundraisers are assigned to the correct lane and territory to maximize pipeline development and achieve annual fundraising success. Ensures that gift officer portfolios have a balanced composition to meet the needs of the university.
  • Work with Associate Vice Chancellor for the Individual Giving team and Executive Director to create and monitor an annual budget for their teams travel and professional development.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Associate Vice Chancellor for Individual Giving (AVC/IG) and Executive Director.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Development experience preferably within a complex university national non-profit organization or organization with sub-units and complex reporting relationships.
    • Significant personal involvement with major gift solicitation and capital prospect management.
    • Significant supervisory experience including professional and support staff.
    • Demonstrated expertise with personal solicitations and the capital gift process.
    • Familiarity with modern university capital gift techniques (moves management tracking systems gift tables solicitation timing and status mechanisms capital and inclination ratings prospect management grids etc.)
    • Experience providing in-house development advice and/or counsel to related units within a complex organization.
    • Ability to work effectively with diverse constituents - board members chancellor vice chancellors deans school or unit directors etc.
    • Strong personal commitment to higher education and its advancement through professional development - CASE AFP etc.
    • Outstanding ability helping to plan coordinate and manage capital development projects and campaigns.
