What does a Mechanical Engineering Intern do for us
Operating under supervision and with significant oversight an Engineering Intern works within an assigned group to assist engineering staff while gaining valuable skills and experience. They may interface with internal departments and external organizations receiving regular guidance from leaders and other engineers.
Energy Efficiency Custom Projects Development and Analysis:
Idaho Power Company Commercial and Industrial Energy Efficiency Program provides technical assistance and financial incentives to help our commercial and industrial customers make changes to their systems and processes to decrease their electrical energy use and lower their operating costs. The intern will collect and analyze data on a wide variety of industrial systems such as: compressed air ammonia refrigeration pumping systems fan systems HVAC controls strategic energy management and lighting. The intern will be performing customer site assessments and energy efficiency calculations for a variety of different customers mechanical systems. Additionally this role exposes interns to the complex and dynamic nature of energy efficiency in the regulated utility industry.
Generator Dispatch Model Calibration:
Open to any engineering discipline
With a strong foundation in hydroelectric generation and growing investments in resources including solar and battery storage were now tackling the challenge of meeting rapid energy demand growth across the region. As an intern youll help build and refine a model of the regional power system that guides how we balance energy generation transmission and demand-side solutions. Youll dive into the operations of hydro thermal nuclear storage and renewable resources across the Western Interconnection gaining hands-on experience with the tools and methods used to optimize power plant operations. This is a unique opportunity to develop an analytical framework to address real-world energy challenges learn how energy systems operate across diverse geographies and contribute to Idaho Powers long-term resource planning.

This position is a sedentary job requiring working at a desk/computer for extended periods of time. It requires the use of office equipment fine motor skills including typing on the computer dialing phones filing paper and working in close proximity to other people. There may be occasional lifts of no more than 10 lbs. Ergonomic accommodations including sit to stand desks are available and installed as needed. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Occasional overnight travel may be required. Some roles require field visits and outdoor work. Candidates for these roles must be able to hike and walk over uneven terrain possibly in inclement weather.
