Job Description

The Deputy Finance Director will play a crucial role in supporting all Finance Department functions and safeguarding the organizations assets. Reporting to the Director of Finance and working closely with management external auditors and tax accountants the Deputy Finance Director will be entrusted to maintain strong internal controls while assisting in the management of month and year-end financial close cycles audit and tax reporting budget preparation and monthly financial statement analysis.


The Deputy Finance Director must demonstrate the highest level of integrity and maintain strict confidentiality with sensitive financial institution information financial statements budgets and payroll data. Previous experience working on annual audits (or other attestation services) and facilitating month and year-end close cycles is required. The successful candidate will hold a high bar for excellence even when things get hectic; manage a high volume of work with efficiency; and juggle competing demands to prioritize without sacrificing quality.


Supervisory Responsibilities

The Deputy Finance Director will initially share supervisory responsibility for the Finance Associate with the Finance Director; longer term this position will have full supervisory responsibility for the Finance Associate.


Employment Status

This is an exempt non-union position based at our Chicago Illinois office and offers a hybrid work structure of four days in office and one day of remote work.


Responsibilities

  • Participate in all aspects of managing the organizations recurring finance functions including monthly close and financial reporting banking investment management budgeting payroll support and employee benefit expenses.
  • Work with external auditors to coordinate and oversee audit and tax reporting deliverables: prepare supporting work papers and schedules and guide the development of annual audit reports and federal and state tax filings.
  • Refine and administer effective internal controls to safeguard assets and minimize risk.
  • Execute and ensure organization compliance with internal policies and all local state and federal reporting requirements and accounting standards.
  • Maintain insurance policies and contracts.
  • Review expenditures and process payments to ensure financial health and sustainability.
  • Engage in cross-departmental collaboration to create budgets and reports supporting grant proposals and funding.
Requirements
  • Accounting degree.
  • 5 years of relevant hands-on full-time accounting experience particularly within the following areas: month- and year-end close cycles financial statement preparation and analysis detailed reconciliations annual audits (or other attestation services) and tax reporting.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills with the ability to manipulate large data sets using filters Pivot Tables VLOOKUP queries and other advanced formulae. Experience with general ledger accounting systems required; Financial Edge NXT a plus.
  • Familiarity with payroll and benefit expenses preferred.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and act with integrity and professionalism at all times.
  • Experience administering and ensuring compliance with critical internal controls and policies with colleagues at all levels.
  • Excellent attention to detail strong organizational skills and a personal sense of ownership and accountability for the work.
  • Advanced analytical strategic thinking problem solving and communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with colleagues and contacts with different backgrounds experiences and positions within the organization.
  • Passion for advancing the ACLU of Illinois mission goals and programs.


Physical Requirements

Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.

Must be able to lift up to 10 pounds at times.


Salary and Benefits

The salary range for this position is $80000 to $95000 commensurate with experience.

  • Vacation: 15 days of paid vacation in the first year and 20 days of paid vacation thereafter.
