Under the supervision of a Police Sergeant this position performs general police work in the protection of life and property prevention of crime enforcement of laws and ordinances and community policing programs.

Lateral Officers are encouraged to apply and may be eligible for top pay and an accelerated hiring process.
Applicants must have completed a probationary period as a sworn law enforcement officer with a U.S. agency.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Respond on or off duty to police calls and emergencies as directed; provide assistance as needed.
  • Properly investigate complaints maintain order in disputes and perform community outreach duties as assigned.
  • Patrol assigned area by vehicle or foot to deter and detect unlawful activities; observe and detect traffic violations; enforce vehicle and traffic laws; check for suspicious activities; actively seek wanted persons or property; and operate a vehicle in emergency mode when necessary.
  • Apprehend violators and perform investigative work as required.
  • Arrest and process suspects document evidence complete detailed reports appear and/or testify in court as required and serve subpoenas as directed.
  • Utilize de-escalation tactics which may take the form of scene management team tactics and/or individual engagement.
  • Tactically face threatening situations and be prepared to use deadly force when justified.
  • Monitor and ensure proper flow of traffic; direct traffic when necessary and report hazardous conditions.
  • Investigate and prepare traffic accident reports; enforce parking ordinances; report abandoned or damaged vehicles; assist stranded motorists; request checks on vehicle registrations warrants and firearms; issue tickets citations and tags for illegal violations.
  • Operate and maintain communication equipment tactical tools vehicles office electronics and issued uniforms; report damage loss or malfunction to the immediate supervisor.
  • Maintain effective community relations including answering questions referring citizens to proper law enforcement agencies providing directions and assistance and participating in community outreach activities.
  • Maintain relationships with other governmental agencies and schools for coordination of investigations and related activities.
  • Maintain personal character ethics skills proficiency and physical conditioning.
  • Stay abreast of developments in the field of law enforcement and changes in related laws and ordinances.

When Assigned to Investigations Division

  • Plan and conduct investigations of assigned cases; coordinate with supervisors and patrol to gather information determine needs and schedule investigation steps.
  • Obtain and process physical evidence; ensure proper handling documentation and lab testing procedures.
  • Participate in the apprehension of suspects; coordinate with other members of the department; arrange for warrants and subpoenas as required.
  • Develop cases for prosecution; build and maintain complete case files; work with the prosecuting attorneys office and recommend case disposition as appropriate; appear in court as required.
  • Maintain external contacts for intelligence and investigative purposes including with other law enforcement agencies and community organizations.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Associates degree from an accredited college; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge skills and abilities to perform the work
  • At least 18 years of age
  • United States Citizen
  • Possess and maintain a Peace Officer license or eligibility to be licensed through the State of Minnesota P.O.S.T. Board by date of hire
  • Must possess or have the ability to obtain a valid and unrestricted Minnesota Drivers License
  • Must possess and maintain a physical condition satisfactory to fulfill the duties of the position as determined by a physician of the Citys choice
  • Must be able to pass a thorough background investigation psychological evaluation medical examination and drug test

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelors Degree in Criminal Justice or related field
  • Prior law enforcement experience
  • Current CPR and First Aid certification

Work Schedule and Environment

  • Base Patrol Schedule: 10.75-hour shifts (5-on/5-off 5-on/5-off 4-on/4-off rotation every other weekend off)
  • Normal shift 10.75 hours
  • Work performed indoors and outdoors in controlled environments and inclement weather
