Special Information:

This position may be eligible for a statutory base pay increase of $1.00 an hour effective July 1 2026.

Specific Job Information:

This position is a full time seasonal (0 .75 FTE appx 1500 hours/yr) based at FWP Region 4 HQ in Great Falls. This is an aggregate position which currently has an employee working about 0.15 FTE annually. Successful candidate will work cooperatively with current employee to fill the total 0.90 FTE position. The incumbent must be able to work outdoors in potentially adverse weather conditions in remote locations varying from the Missouri River Breaks to the Rocky Mountains. The incumbent must be willing to initiate contact with landowners partner agencies and FWP addition to mostly field work outdoors this position requires office work gathering information such as survey and inventory habitat analysis and types data entry as well as coordinating activities with department staff landowners and agency partners. The work product for this position is consistent and substantial accomplishments of on-the-ground upland wildlife and habitat management and related public access.

Job Duties:

Under supervision of the regional wildlife manager the technician will primarily assist management biologists and specialists across FWP Region 4 in survey and inventory efforts upland game bird enhancement projects habitat conservation projects WMA habitat work grazing and farming leases report writing filing and computer data analysis. The technician will be assigned to support and conduct projects to address regional and statewide wildlife management priorities to implement species management programs or projects and to implement access programs or projects related to such. The technician will be responsible to ensure projects are being conducted using the best approach available to ensure success and may be responsible to troubleshoot and solve basic problems they encounter. The technician may capture and mark animals with GPS collar transmitters with subsequent monitoring aerially and from the ground. Field work conducting aerial and ground wildlife surveys monitor sex/age classifications of animal species game damage response urban wildlife complaints and other tasks. The technician may collect biological samples from animals including blood tissue or skeletal parts and may investigate death sites of animals to determine cause of death including disease monitoring (CWD EHD etc). The technician may also provide assistance at hunter check stations in collecting hunter harvest and biological data from harvested animals. The technician may work with the public landowners hunters Federal land managers other FWP staff to coordinate projects. The technician may analyze the data collected to interpret information for reports used in making program decisions. Knowledge of game nongame upland bird migratory bird and wildlife habitats plant and soil science including vegetation management techniques and agricultural operations. A general understanding of word-processing spreadsheet data entry and GPS/GIS use.

Minimum Qualifications (Education and Experience):

The knowledge skills and abilities of this position are normally attained through combination of education and experience equivalent to a minimum of two years of college work towards a bachelors degree in wildlife biology fish and wildlife management animal ecology biology or a closely related field and related work experience. Combinations of education and experience will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

May be required to acquire and maintain certification in the capture and handling of wildlife.
