Job Summary

Duties & Responsibilities

Our client a Wine Farm and Bottling facility in Paarl is looking for a Quality Control Manager to join their team.

KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS

Analysis of Wines

  • Organise testing of wine samples: internal lab or external lab
  • Receive requests for specific analysis and conduct them
  • Ensure pre-bottlings are correct

Managing of laboratory

  • Ensure analyst sends water and effluent samples each month
  • Together with analyst:
    • Check accounts and orders regarding chemicals equipment etc.
    • Ensure analyst saves COAs of chemicals
    • Assist analyst with supplier management
  • Internal standards need to be kept updated monthly
  • Ensure environmental monitoring is completed
  • Improve reproducibility and accuracy of methods and check that protocol is followed
  • Methods to review accuracy of lab: SAWLA (South Africa Wine Laboratory Association) interlab testing should be completed monthly. Results to be filled in online in specified week.
  • Ensure calibration schedule is followed for instruments

Bottling Line

  • Daily sign off on bottling packages and check that everything is filled in.
  • Perform bottling quality tests
  • Weekly sign off on bottling cleaning form.
  • Monthly sign-off on bottling monthly maintenance form and hygiene clearance
  • Adhoc maintenance on bottling line should be reported so that hygiene clearance can be filled in.
  • Medical screening form filled in for visitors and contractors
  • Verify cleaning procedures with Hygiena and Suretrend Software

Health and safety

  • Assist Chair of committee with admin tasks
  • Arrange meetings and incorporate sections to improve involvement of all members in meeting
  • Encourage and check that GMP audits are performed monthly as the safety audit have been incorporated into these (feedback in BRC meeting and H&S meeting)
  • First aid incidents need to be mentioned and discussed to ensure compliance
  • Induction training
  • Liaise with Health and Safety consultant about needs that the company have

BRC

  • Document control officer
  • Non-conformance reports
  • Internal audits
  • Follow the QMS calendar
  • Do trainings as scheduled and necessary
  • Ensure Lab analyst does GMP audits

New label developments

  • Liaise with designers and printers about new label developments
  • Proofread and make minor changes to existing labels
  • Ensure that all applicable parties give authorisation that labels can be printed
  • Go to printers to sign of the first print run of a new label
  • Liaise with finance manager about costing of labels and new product developments
  • Submit all new labels to SAWIS for approval.
  • Save all artworks for labels cartons closures etc
  • Fairtrade approval for trademark use:
  • Ensure label complies with standard
  • Send to Fairtrade
  • Obtain approval before starting printing
  • Approval shows on the CONNECT website
  • Ecocert Organic approval for trademark use:
  • Ensure label complies with standard
  • Send to Ecocert
  • Obtain approval before starting printing
  • Save approval certificate
  • Beveg vegan approval for trademark use:
  • Ensure label complies with standard
  • Send to Merieux so that they forward to BeVeg
  • Obtain approval before starting printing
  • Save approval certificate

General cleanliness and good housekeeping

  • Verify cleaning methods with Hygiena and Suretrend software
  • See that chemical and additive rooms are in a good condition
  • General cleanliness and neatness in cellar

Adhoc

  • Facilitate and prepare for external audits (BRCGS IPW BeVeg Vegan EcoCert Organic Fairtrade Wieta)
  • Light Carbon website for IPW
  • WW website and contacts ensure requests are completed
  • Sedex website administrator
  • Enter wine competitions and organise samples and delivery
  • Label admin for export companies

REQUIREMENTS

  • BSc Chemistry BSc Food Science B. Tech Food Technologist (specifically on wine) BSc Oenology and Viticulture
  • 2 3 years experience in similar position
  • Experience with BRCGS/ FSSC 22000 or relevant FSM system
  • Experience with laboratory experiments and managing people
  • Chemistry knowledge in the wine industry is advantageous
  • Own transport
  • Strong analytical chemistry skills
  • Strong organisational skills
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Self-motivated
  • Able to work independently
  • Positive attitude
  • Willingness to learn

SALARY

Negotiable depending on experience
