The School of Phlebotomy is a comprehensive training program where the employed student phlebotomist will learn to perform venipunctures and skin punctures to obtain blood specimens on all age groups from children to adults.

Training occurs through didactic and clinical rotations covering the procedures that phlebotomist must perform as well as the roles that phlebotomists play in the health care arena.

They will gain the knowledge to perform a wide range of tasks in order to be responsible and accountable for providing specimens of the highest analytical quality for testing.

Job Duties:

  • Trained to perform venipunctures and skin punctures to obtain blood specimens according to prescribed procedures;know adequate and correct collection requirementsand perform accessioning procedures appropriately and accurately to ensure positive identification of the specimens.
  • Trained toexhibitaccuracy in specimen identification labeling accessioning processing and patient billing.
  • Trained toprovidetimelytransport of a specimen to theappropriate specimenprocessing or analyzing location.
  • Trained todemonstrategood problem-solving skills recognize discrepancies in patient orders and resolve or refer problems asappropriate.
  • Trained to evaluate specimen suitability and acceptability resolve discrepancies asappropriate andinitiatethe recollectionprocessas necessary.
  • Trained to accurately process specimens for analysis according to prescribed procedures.
  • Know and abide by Geisinger and Geisinger Medical Laboratories policies and procedures including compliance policies.
  • Completion of School of Phlebotomy coursework within a twelve-weektimeframewhich includes evaluations and clinical rotations by the Program Director and designated preceptors.

Program overview:

The Geisinger School of Phlebotomys NAACLS-accredited program includes training in all aspects of phlebotomy as well as an introduction to the major sections within the laboratory (including chemistry hematology microbiology serology). This program includes classroom lectures and clinical components including a student laboratory and a clinical rotation.


Students will be taught a variety of phlebotomy techniques to obtain blood samples from both adult and pediatric patients. They will be trained in the proper techniques to prepare specimens for testing and they will learn about laboratory regulations safety issues and infection control procedures. Students will also learn the importance of accurate patient identification along with procedures for obtaining quality lab specimens.

Upon successful completion of the program students can immediately transfer into a Phlebotomist II role within the Geisinger system!

Additional Details:

The application process includes online application (including detailed resume) and successful interview.

  • Classes begin and will run for 14 weeks

  • Classes are typically held from 8:45 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. Monday through Thursday.

    • This enables a student to complete approximately 230 hours of classroom training and 210 clinical hours at a Geisinger site.

  • All students are paid an hourly rate for attending class and completing clinical rotations. There is no cost to the student to attend the School of Phlebotomy other than the cost of obtaining scrub uniforms and necessary school supplies for class.

  • This program is designed for those interested in working as phlebotomists upon graduation. It is not intended as a complement for a nursing MD/DO or other program that requires clinical experience hours.

  • Upon acceptance to the school students will be required to undergo the established Geisinger onboarding process which includes completing a background check meeting with employee health (including a nicotine and drug screen) and providing references.

Learn more about the program by visiting: successful completion of the program students will be promoted into a Phlebotomist II role within the Geisinger system! This training program is valued at $3500 but tuition is waived for students in exchange for a twenty-four-month work commitment.

Students who accept a spot in our School will be required to sign a contract with Geisinger that outlines that in exchange for the subsidized education the student agrees to work in a paid full-time capacity for Geisinger Medical Laboratories for twenty-four months following graduation from the program.

Students should have reliable transportation to class as well as to clinic sites.
