Purpose

The Sanitation Supervisor supervises crews for refuse andrecycling collection street sweeping leaf collection snow plowing icecontrol and various other sanitation-related duties.

Essential Functions

Supervision

  • Supervise and coordinate refuse and recycling crews and other staff to ensure overall productivity of operations and that collection schedules are consistently maintained.
  • Instruct and supervise staff to ensure collection schedules and customer service meet or exceed expectations.
  • Supervise and coordinate field winter snow and ice control operations activities.
  • Coordinate equipment and personnel assigned to street cleaning leaf collection and other sanitation activities including special events such as festivals fireworks parades sporting events and neighborhood cleanups.
  • Monitor and ensure proper and efficient use of city equipment related to refuse collection street sweeping and snow and ice operations.
  • Coach and develop employees to support their success.
  • Monitor environmental condition of assigned area noticing and addressing conditions such as illegal dumping broken or overflowing containers spills and debris in the street and around properties.

Customer Service

  • Represent the department by responding in person by phone and in writing to service inquiries and complaints from residents and public officials.
  • Educate residents on provisions of city ordinances and policies that govern solid waste and recycling operations.
  • Represent the Sanitation division at aldermanic meetings neighborhood meetings and block walks.

Administrative

  • Update and maintain various electronic databases for collection code enforcement and other sanitation-related services.
  • Monitor and utilize various web and computer applications such as Routeware SmartCity Automatic Vehicle Location (AVL) and Department of Public Works (DPW) work orders.
  • Perform various administrative functions using Microsoft Office including compiling daily reports and preparing other ad hoc and periodic reports and writing letters memos and emails to managers DPW leadership elected officials and residents.

Conditions of Employment

  • Must respond to emergency call-outs and report within 60 minutes or fewer at any time during the day or night any day of the week for storm response snow and ice control operations and other emergencies.
  • Must work variable and extended hours to meet the Citys needs during weather-related events and other emergencies that may include evenings weekends and holidays.
  • Must withstand prolonged exposure to variable and extreme weather conditions including rain wind excessive heat intense cold and snow.
  • Must adhere to the winter on-call schedule.
  • Willingness to work in all Milwaukee neighborhoods to serve City residents.
  • Must perform medium physical activity exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Minimum Requirements

  1. Four years of progressively responsible operational experience or experience performing municipal public works activities.
  2. Valid drivers license at time of appointment and throughout employment.

Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in public administration management environmental studies occupational health and safety or a related field from an accredited college or university.
  • One year of lead worker or trainer experience in operations production construction or a related field.
  • Experience in municipal public works or private solid waste and recycling.
  • Experience in customer service and conflict resolution.

  • Ability to read and interpret job-related documents including maps.

Current Salary

The current salary range (Pay Range 1EX) is$72768-$86854and the current resident incentive salary range for City of Milwaukee residentsis$74951-$89460.Appointment above the minimum is possible basedupon level of experience and other qualifications and is subject to approval.

  • The incumbents of positions in this class if certified by the Commissioner of Public Works as being regularly involved in snow and ice control operations which result in an excessive amount of overtime work shall receive a 4.8% additional biweekly salary as compensation for such overtime work.
