A Day in the Life

In this exciting role as a Sr. Principal R&D Engineer you will be responsible for designing prototyping testing and iterating concepts supporting new product development in a cross-functional team environment. This effort will extend throughout all design phases through product launch commercialization activities and in providing support to the sustaining engineering teams as required.
The Surgical Operating Unit (SOU) strives to enable earlier diagnosis better treatment faster complication-free recovery and enhanced patient outcomes through less invasive surgical solutions. The Surgical Instrument Center of Excellence sets the standard for MIS by creating innovative surgical products and services.

Preferred qualifications:
Direct Medical Device development experience.
Thorough knowledge of EM navigation systems architecture and integration on mechanical systems.
Deep understanding of EM sensor properties and test method development.
Understanding Radio Frequency energy and use in surgery.
Working knowledge of laboratory equipment instrumentation and analysis tools.
Working knowledge of statistical analysis and design of experiments driving optimization of materials and processes.
Trained/Certified in Lean and/or 6 Sigma principles
Experience with Jump or Minitab statistical software and tools
Working knowledge of human anatomy soft tissue and lung bronchoscopy procedures

Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned.

  • Designs develops analyzes troubleshoots and provides technical skills during research and/or product development.
  • Designs studies to investigate specific life science questions within field of expertise.
  • May be involved in product research and development and/or clinical trials.
  • Translates research discoveries into usable and marketable products.

TECHNICAL SPECIALIST CAREER STREAM:An individual contributor with responsibility in our technical functions to advance existing technology or introduce new technology and therapies. Formulates delivers and/or manages projects assigned and works with other stakeholders to achieve desired results. May act as a mentor to colleagues or may direct the work of other lower level professionals. The majority of time is spent delivering R&D systems or initiatives related to new technologies or therapies from design to implementation - while adhering to policies using specialized knowledge and skills.

Leadership and Talent Management:Frequently provides guidance coaching and training to other manages large moderately complex initiatives of strategic importance to the organization involving large cross-functional teams.

Required Knowledge and Experience: Requires a Baccalaureate degreeand minimum of 10 years of relevant experience OR Masters degree with a minimum of 8 years relevant experience OR PhD with 6 years relevant experience.

Salary ranges for U.S (excl. PR) locations (USD):$160800.00 - $241200.00

This position is eligible for a short-term incentive called the Medtronic Incentive Plan (MIP).

The base salary range is applicable across the United States excluding Puerto Rico and specific locations in California. The offered rate complies with federal and local regulations and may vary based on factors such as experience certification/education market conditions and location. Compensation and benefits information pertains solely to candidates hired within the United States (local market compensation and benefits will apply for others).
