Job Summary

General Overview of Position

The Kenosha Water Utility (KWU) is accepting online applications for a part-time Building Maintenance Assistant to perform a variety of basic and semi-skilled maintenance and custodial tasks at the Wastewater Treatment Plant (7834 3rd Avenue). Part-time schedule would be 15-30 hours/week year-round with ability to take time off with proper notice. The weekly work schedule is intended to be Monday-Friday mornings although there may be flexibility for a different work schedule. The Building Maintenance Assistant position is for someone who is only looking to work part-time as this position will not lead to full-time employment. Per KWU/City policy part-time/seasonal employment may not exceed 1500 hours in the designated 12-month period.

Example of Duties & Responsibilities

  • Performs custodial tasks such as:
    • Empties trash and recycling bins.
    • Sweeps vacuums mops and waxes floors.
    • Dusts washes and scrubs a variety of surfaces such as walls windows sinks toilets etc
    • Mix water and detergents or acids in containers to prepare cleaning solutions according to specifications.
    • Clean windows or mirrors using soapy water or other cleaners sponges or squeegees.
    • Prepares and paints a variety of surface.
    • Replaces light bulbs or switch plates.
    • Performs snow removal activities such as clearing snow and spreading salt on walkways and around the exterior of buildings.
    • Performs other related building/grounds maintenance duties as needed.

Requirements

Education Training Experience and Other Requirements:

  • High school diploma GED or equivalent.
  • Valid drivers license with a good driving record.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of professional experience which included the responsibility of custodial and building maintenance preferably in an industrial environment (plant or factory) or for a large business.
  • Or an equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge skills and abilities.
  • If offered this position must pass a driving record review criminal background check and post-offer drug screen.

Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of the principles practices materials and equipment related to the cleaning maintenance and repair of buildings and grounds in an industrial or other large business environment.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safe work practices associated with building maintenance and groundskeeping tasks.
  • Ability to operate hand and power tools/equipment associated with building and grounds maintenance.
  • Ability to work effectively and efficiently independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to understand and carry out verbal and written instructions
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and know when to contact supervisor (or designee) on tasks which are complex or incumbent is not qualified to complete.
  • Ability to handle reasonably necessary stress associated with this type of work.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to coordinate eyes hands feet and limbs in performing tasks.
  • Ability to grip lift and carry objects up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to push and pull objects up to 100 pounds.
  • Ability to stand for an extended period of time
  • Ability to bend reach stoop kneel and crouch.
  • Ability to ascend and descend ladders and stairs.
  • Ability to manipulate hand and power tools used in the building maintenance including those which require a repetitive motion or involve vibration (e.g. paint brushes paint rollers string trimmers).

Environmental Requirements:

  • Duties are performed within a plant enviroinment with some outdoor assignments which require exposure to adverse environmental conditions such as: inclement weather strong odors chemical hazards extreme noise wetness dust and pollen. Such exposure may cause some discomfort or risk of injury if safe work practices are not followed.

Sensory Requirements:

  • Requires the ability to recognize and discriminate similarities and differences in job-related objects materials and tasks. Such sensory characteristics include: color shapes/textures sounds odors and distance/depth.
