Axle is seeking a Facilities Management Assistant to join our vibrant team at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) supporting the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS) in Rockville MD.

Overall Position Summary and Objectives

This order will independently provide support services to satisfy the overall operational objectives.


Deliverables:

  • Work products and documents related to observing receiving incoming materials; verify accuracy of shipments; process return shipments from customers; sort count package label insure and /or log inventory which is shipped or received. - Ad-Hoc
  • Work products and documents related to inspecting shipments; record discrepancies or damage and notify purchasing personnel; trace lost shipments and/or customer claims of lost shipments; file shipping/receiving records. - Ad-Hoc
  • Work products and documents related to ensuring proper routing of FedEx and international shipments prepared by others; organize equipment manuals registrations and warranties; enter supply items into POTS/NBS. - Ad-Hoc
  • Work products and documents related to scheduling and monitoring periodic maintenance and certification; arrange for repair of scientific equipment; certify operation of all facility eye wash stations; collect chemical waste carboys and barrels from satellite accumulation areas. - Ad-Hoc
  • Work products and documents related to processing biohazardous trash; maintain cleanliness of the laboratory work area and equipment; function as member of the evacuation team; respond to central equipment monitoring alarms and attempt to resolve issues. - Ad-Hoc

Work Details:

  • Observe the receiving of incoming materials and compare information on packing slip with purchase order to verify accuracy of shipment; process return shipments from customers. - 1
  • Sort count package label insure and /or log inventory which is shipped or received. - 2
  • Inspect shipments for damage or defects; record discrepancies or damage and notify purchasing personnel or other government personnel. - 3
  • Coordinate hazardous chemical waste removal from labs in accordance with DOHS/DEP regulations.
  • Coordinate lab recycling.
  • Maintain functional inventory of hazardous waste supplies (blue barrels/carboys green bins waste tags).
  • Assists Facilities Managers with lab renovation projects.
  • Coordinate incoming items/packages for labs.
  • Maintain N2 tanks for TDB Bio ADST Tox21 and Genomic Tox lab operations.
  • Autoclave and sanitize glassware for laboratories.
  • Troubleshoot scientific equipment issues (performance mechanical parts).
  • Coordinate scientific equipment repairs (order parts/repair equipment directly or facilitate repairs with certified technicians).
  • Dismantling/delivering large instruments to aid in access to the lab.
  • Assist with cleaning and sanitizing lab incubators on monthly basis.
  • Set up and maintain life safety stations in laboratories (Narcan dispensing stations) as well as installations of first-aid equipment/kits in laboratories.
  • Coordinate distribute and install life safety signage in laboratories.
  • Installation of equipment in laboratories.
  • Complete all acquisitions paperwork for end users.
  • Serves as liaison to acquisitions training/paperwork.
  • OEC for drills ensures safe evacuation of labs.
  • Coordinate safety supplies (masks sanitizer etc.) inventory and distribution.
  • Providing budget breakdowns of stock/inventory to team leads.

  • Obtain authorized signatures for accepted items; trace lost shipments and/or customer claims of lost shipments; initiate proof of delivery documents.
  • File shipping/receiving records.
  • Ensure proper routing of FedEx and international shipments prepared by others.
  • Organize equipment manuals registrations and warranties.
  • Enter supply items into POTS/NBS/SOS.
  • Schedule and monitor periodic maintenance and certification (biosafety cabinets chemical fume hoods incubators etc.).
  • Arrange for repair of scientific equipment by contacting local service company to get price information followed by entry into POTS.
  • Certify operation of all facility eye wash stations on a biweekly basis.
  • Organize collection of MPWs chemical waste carboys and hazardous waste barrels from satellite accumulation areas.
  • Process biohazardous trash according to established procedures either by placement in boxes for disposal as medical pathological waste (MPW) or discard as general laboratory waste once decontaminated.
  • Handle chemical waste consumables and coordinate waste needs with Clean Ventures.
  • Observe the collection of chemical waste carboys and barrels from satellite accumulation areas; transport them to the hazardous waste storage room; prepare appropriate labels/tags for waste in order to facilitate pickup by the NIH chemical waste contractor.
  • Collaborate with lab Managers on the management of common lab consumables and reagents: monitor stocks and order bulk solvents and consumables.
  • Maintain cleanliness of the laboratory work area and equipment.
  • Work with resident staff in many day-to-day activities; function as member of the evacuation team; respond to central equipment monitoring (Rees) alarms and attempt to resolve with or without outside help.
  • Collaborate with property officers and lab managers on NCATS surplus property.
  • Collaborate with staff and Lab Managers on lab office and equipment moves and installation.

Minimum Education:

Associate


Additional Qualifications:

Certifications & Licenses

  • High school diploma
  • Minimum of three (3) years of related experience
  • Bachelors degree required

Field of Study

  • Less Than a Bachelors Degree

  • Strong communications skills both oral and written
  • Lab equipment maintenance
