POSITION FUNCTION
Operate a backhoe and excavator on various roadway underground utility and related construction projects.
KEY DUTIES
Operate a backhoe and excavator with related attachments such as a hoe pack and hoe ram to excavate load grade move and compact earth and materials; lift and move items such as pipe or road plates into position and erect shoring plates and cages; remove and replace backhoe or excavator attachments as required. Participate in building demolition as requested.
Perform pre- and post- trip inspections by checking items such as fluid levels belts hoses and lights; check and adjust air brake system; clean interior and exterior and related attachments of equipment and grease when required; report repairs needed and damage to supervisor and mechanic shop; check first aid and safety equipment; fill out daily equipment log and time sheets.
Review engineering plans BC 1 and underground checks to confirm that the location of underground utilities and services have been marked out or flagged prior to commencing work.
Perform related duties where qualified.
INDEPENDENCE
Work is assigned by supervisor and reviewed while in progress.
Issues such as equipment repairs and procedural problems are referred to supervisor.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Physical Effort:
Confined to the cab of vehicle. (frequent)
Work in awkward positions while digging deep excavations. (often)
Eye hand foot coordination while operating multiple controls. (frequent)
Lift and move heavy equipment and materials. (rare)
Mental Effort:
Long periods of intense concentration while excavating near underground utilities and services. (frequent)
Visual/Auditory Effort:
Normal.
Work Environment:
Work outside in all weather conditions. (frequent)
Exposure to dust jarring and equipment noise. (continuous)
KEY SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Organize and prioritize work.
Understand and carry out job related instructions.
Operate backhoe excavator and related attachments.
Read and understand underground checks Engineering plans BC 1 and Safety Hazard ID.
Complete forms accurately.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships.
Deal with the public in a courteous and tactful manner.
Work and operate equipment safely.
QUALIFICATIONS
Formal Education Training and Occupational Certification:
High school graduation.
Formal training in the operation of a backhoe. (8 weeks)
Formal training in the operation of an excavator. (8 weeks)
Current and valid Class 5 B.C. Drivers Licence
Experience:
4 years of related experience
or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
OTHER:
May be requested to substitute in a more senior position.
