Job Summary

The School of Interdisciplinary Studies (SIS) at Grand Valley State University (GVSU) is located within the Brooks College of Interdisciplinary Studies with its primary departmental faculty staff and administrative offices based on GVSUs Allendale Campus in Lake Ontario Hall. SIS is hiring three affiliate faculty of instruction (non-tenure track) positions on 9-month full-time academic year positions to be housed within SIS. Normal teaching load is 24-credits/year (four courses per semester).

It is expected that these affiliate faculty members will teach in more than one of the programs (majors minors certificates and badges) within SIS. Areas of need include East Asian Studies Leadership & Business Fundamentals Religious Studies and Women Gender and Sexuality Studies. Faculty will teach in a variety of modalitiesface-to-face hybrid and onlineand term lengths (e.g. 16-week semester accelerated 6-week semester).

Candidates for this position must also be effective at online asynchronous teaching. The faculty member is also expected to participate in regular professional development activities that support their teaching regularly participate in department meetings and be in ongoing communication with SIS Director Assistant Director and relevant Program Directors/Coordinators.

Salary & Benefits: Starting salary of $55000.

Required Qualifications and Education:

  • Completed at least a masters degree in a relevant field by time of application
  • Demonstrated teaching expertise at the undergraduate level
  • Demonstrated excellent face-to-face teaching experience
  • Demonstrated excellent online and/or hybrid teaching experience
  • Experience working with and understanding of underrepresented and diverse populations including returning adult learners
  • Willingness to teach undergraduate majors minors and non-majors alike across all course levels (e.g. introductory capstone general education courses)
  • Demonstrated commitment to collaborating with colleagues both faculty and staff including ability to work well as a team with both faculty and staff;
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently while remaining in active touch with collaborators and supervisors;
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills;
  • Strong organizational skills that span both administrative and teaching-focused work;
  • Demonstrated commitment to the value of a liberal education;
  • Demonstrated ability or strong potential to teach a range of core courses within two or more of the schools academic programs. Courses could include but are not limited to: REL 100: Religions of the World; REL 200: Understanding Religions in Human Experience; REL 306: Hinduism and South Asian Religions; INT 100: Reflect Connect Engage; INT 201: Diversity in the United States; INT 312: Collaborative Communication; INT 323: Design Thinking to Meet Real World Needs; INT 331: Person and Profession in the Global Environment; EAS 201: East Asia in the Contemporary World; BAS 301: Concepts of Learning Integration; ENS 201: Introduction to Environmental and Sustainability Studies; WGS 201: Foundations of Feminism; WGS 224: Introduction to LGTBQ Studies

Preferred Qualifications and Education:

  • Commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration with colleagues from outside ones primary field of expertise/training
  • Academic qualifications in fields of greatest teaching need in order to serve the departments growing academic programs;
  • Demonstrated teaching excellence in working with adult learners and diverse communities of learners;
  • Experience with integrative and community-based learning in a higher education context;
  • Experience advising and mentoring undergraduate students;
  • Experience advising and mentoring undergraduate internships practicum and/or community-based research;
  • Strong community ties in communities served by Grand Valley State University;
  • Demonstrated experience teaching in accelerated formats; and
  • Academic training in andragogy and/or online/hybrid teaching

Responsibilities Essential Functions:

  • Affiliate faculty of Instruction in Brooks College are typically hired on 9-month contracts and teach 24 credits/year typically divided as four classes in Fall and four classes in Winter Semesters.
  • Affiliate faculty of Instruction faculty at Grand Valley State University are expected to maintain a commitment to continual improvement with respect to teaching effectiveness.
