Streets Maintenance Technician I-IV

GENERAL PURPOSE:
Each level of the Maintenance Technician performs semi-skilled labor in a variety of activities and equipment operation in the construction maintenance and repair of streets sidewalks storm drainage pavement markings and other city assets. This position requires occasional on-call work and the ability to work well independently and with teams while providing excellent respectful customer service.
The City of Wheat Ridge has four levels of Maintenance Technician:
-Maintenance Technician I: entry level position
-Maintenance Technician II: performs semi-skilled to skilled tasks
-Maintenance Technician III: performs semi-skilled to skilled tasks
-Maintenance Technician IV: journey level position
The ability to advance in grade and level depends on acquired experience skill and certification level as described below.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBLITIES:
Involved in all aspects of asphalt and concrete repair and maintenance; shovel and spread asphalt and asphalt base in the patching repairing and reconstruction of streets including crack sealing. Uses concrete cutting and breaking equipment; operates a jackhammer; forms pours and finishes concrete; performs rough carpentry work; spreads and compacts gravel; grades alleys.
Performs snow removal duties by operating truck-mounted snowplows graders and spreaders; applies chemical de-icers to streets. Must be available to work beyond normal working hours and on weekends as needed for snow/ice control maintenance during winter months generally September 1 - April 30.
Operates construction equipment such as tandem-axle dump trucks rollers front end loaders street sweepers and power tools such as compressors jackhammers paint sprayers sandblasters concrete saws and sewer jetters in a variety of construction maintenance and repairs efforts. Performs pre- and post-trip inspections. Cleans and fuels assigned vehicles at the end of each shift. Identifies equipment needs for each assigned project.
Cuts installs and sets storm drainpipes to proper grades. Inspects and clears obstructions from storm drains.
Performs layout installation and removal of traffic control markings such as crosswalks lane stripes and turn arrows. Works with inlay and overlay of thermoplastic. Operates and maintains paint equipment.
Installs work zone traffic control devices prior to the performance of any work in the right-of-way. Directs and controls traffic around work sites. May develop work zone traffic control plans.
Cleans debris from streets ditches and other public right-of-way areas.
Performs general construction maintenance routine facility & vehicle maintenance as necessary and basic building tasks.
Utilizes proper safety precautions related to all work performed.
Responds to requests and inquiries from the public.
Prepares daily reports vehicle checklists job report forms and other necessary documentation.
Responds to requests for utility locations including research through GIS system.
Responds to emergency calls on weekends and nights as required.
Performs related work as required and assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
High school diploma or general education diploma (GED).
KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of:
Methods techniques and tools and the operational characteristics of mechanical equipment used in construction repair and maintenance activities.
Uses purposes and safety practices of general hand tools and light equipment.

Perform safe and lawful operation of a motor vehicle.
Perform semi-skilled and skilled tasks in a variety of construction maintenance and repair activities.
Operate a variety of vehicles and mechanical equipment in a safe and effective manner.
Perform on-call duties as required by the department.
Understand and complete verbal & written directions.
Work courteously and cooperatively with other employees and the public.
Promote a culture of safety in the workplace; reports safety hazards when observed.
Rotating on-call schedule that occurs monthly thru the winter months which can lead to having to work on holidays birthdays weekends etc. Employees designated as on-call would need to report to the City within 60 minutes of notification.
Serves as an essential worker for snow emergency response or when a local announcement of emergency or disaster is declared by the city or state.
Maintenance Technician I
No previous experience is required however experience in general construction or municipal government is desired. The City offers assistance and opportunity for Maintenance Technician I to obtain their Class B CDL. CDL is required within 3 months of hire; flagger certification required within 1 year of hire.
Maintenance Technician II
Prerequisite Certification: Class B CDL & Flagger Certification.
Maintenance Technician Ill
Minimum two years streets maintenance experience required.
Prerequisite Certification: Class B CDL Flagger Certification and APWA Winter Maintenance Operator Certificate
Maintenance Technician IV
Minimum four years streets maintenance experience required.
Prerequisite Certification: Class B CDL Flagger Certification APWA Winter Maintenance Operator Certificate and APWA Winter Maintenance Supervisor Certificate
CERTIFICATES LICENSES REGISTRATIONS
Possession of a valid Colorado drivers license with a safe driving record. The city is required by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) to conduct pre employment and ongoing random drug screens background checks and motor vehicle record checks. Successful candidates must pass all of the above including a DOT physical and a criminal background check.
