About the Role

Birmingham is a city of ambition growth and transformation. As Director of Infrastructure and Sustainability you will lead the strategic planning and delivery of major capital infrastructure projects that shape the citys futurecovering transport active travel digital connectivity energy public realm and sustainability.

You will be at the forefront of embedding Birminghams Climate Emergency and Air Quality commitments across all infrastructure functions ensuring that environmental social and economic goals are achieved hand-in-hand. Working with national and regional partners as well as major developers and investors you will secure the funding and partnerships needed to deliver projects of both local and national significance including HS2 Midlands Rail Hub and East Birminghams regeneration zones.

This is a pivotal opportunity to shape Birminghams sustainable growth improve connectivity and deliver a greener more inclusive city for residents communities and businesses.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Lead the development and delivery of Birminghams capital infrastructure strategy ensuring projects align with the citys economic environmental and social priorities.
  • Drive delivery of major schemes in transport active travel energy digital infrastructure and public realm securing funding and investment from national regional and private partners.
  • Embed the Councils Climate Emergency Air Quality and Net Zero objectives across all infrastructure planning and delivery.
  • Oversee Birminghams involvement in nationally significant programmes such as HS2 Midlands Rail Hub Metro and Rapid Transit expansion.
  • Maximise the impact of ringfenced funding sources including Clean Air Zone income ensuring resources are invested effectively to deliver strategic outcomes.
  • Act as the Councils lead representative with government departments regional partners businesses and developers ensuring Birminghams infrastructure ambitions are clearly communicated and delivered.
  • Promote the citys expertise and vision at national and international forums positioning Birmingham as a leader in sustainable inclusive growth.
  • Provide strategic leadership and assurance on key regeneration zones including the Enterprise Zone West Midlands Investment Zone and East Birmingham Inclusive Growth Zone.
  • Inspire develop and lead a high-performing infrastructure and sustainability team embedding a culture of delivery innovation and accountability.
  • Work collaboratively across directorates to align infrastructure programmes with wider Council priorities including skills jobs housing health and wellbeing.
  • Advise and support Cabinet Members senior officers and Commissioners on risks opportunities and progress relating to major infrastructure programmes.
  • Establish a Directorate Delivery Unit to strengthen performance risk management reporting and horizon scanning ensuring delivery at pace and within budget.
