DYS is the juvenile corrections system for the state of Ohio. DYS is statutorily mandated to confine felony offenders ages 10-21 who have been adjudicated and committed by one of Ohios 88 county juvenile courts. During their stay with DYS youth are engaged in programming that is designed to address their criminological and behavioral needs. DYS reaches thousands of youth in facilities and those on parole.

BACKGROUND CHECK NOTICE:

The final candidate selected for this position will be required to undergo a criminal background check and pre-employment drug screening. Criminal convictions do not necessarily preclude an applicant from consideration for a position. An individual assessment of an applicants prior criminal convictions will be made before excluding an applicant from consideration.

PRE-SERVICE TRAINING:

All final candidates are required to attend 3 weeks of mandatory paid training at the Correctional Training Academy in Orient Ohio. This training is fully paid for and will cover lodging transportation (if needed) and meals. Training takes place for 3 weeks Monday through Thursday 7AM to 5PM with Fridays Saturdays and Sundays off.

Qualifications - External

30 mos. exp. with coaching personal training &/or fitness instruction or 30 mos. exp. providing work direction to incarcerated persons & training &/or development.

-Or completion of associate degree in recreation; 12 mos. activity therapy or recreation.

-Or completion of undergraduate core program in recreation; 6 mos. activity therapy or recreation.

-Or 6 mos. exp. as General Activities Therapist 1 44211.

-Or equivalent of Minimum Class Qualifications for Employment noted above.

DYS is seeking a General Activities Therapist 2 at Indian River Juvenile Correctional Facility

Duties may include but are not limited to:

  • Plans conducts implements and monitors general recreational personal development structured therapeutic and entertainment activities for youth
  • Serves as a member of interdisciplinary team and analyzes assesses evaluates defines and recommends group and or individual treatment goals and activities.
  • Observes participants during activities.
  • Serves in instructional capacity for youth.
  • Prepares and maintains reports for treatment team regarding individual behavior and progress regarding individual recreational program activities.
  • Prepares and maintains inventory records of equipment tools and materials.
  • Prepares weekly activity schedule
