  • Citizenship Requirements: Must be a U.S. Citizen.

  • Type of Employment: Full-Time 40 hours per week.
  • Estimate Pay: $39.12 - $44.21/hr
  • Paid Time Off per Year: Up to 80-hours per year occurring on day one.
  • Sick Leave per Year: Up to 56-hours per year occurring on day one.
  • Paid Federal Holidays: Eleven (11) Paid Federal Holidays

Working Hours

The Dental Hygienist will normally work from Monday through Friday from 7:30am to 4:00pm with a 30-minute unpaid lunch break. The Dental Hygienist will not work more than 40 hours a week.

Summary of Duties

The Dental Hygienist will be responsible for personal health care needs and costs associated with exposure or possible exposure to any blood borne pathogen or other risk encountered during performance of their Duties.

Qualifications

  • Must be a graduate from an accredited Dental Hygienist School or program.
  • Licensed as a Dental Hygienist by the Texas Board of Dentistry.
  • Must have Dental Radiology Certification.
  • Must have at least two (2) or more years of experience.
  • Must be Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certified either by the American Red Cross (ARC)or the American Heart Association (AHA).

Attire

The Dental Hygienist is expected to wear professional clothing while on duty (scrub uniforms are approved). The attire worn shall also be appropriate for the correctional environment in which the contractor will be performing. The Dental Hygienist is prohibited from wearing khaki or green clothing of any type as this is the color clothing the Adults in Custody (AIC) population wear.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide dental prophylaxis other preventative oral health services and other periodontal services for Adults in Custody (AIC) who are referred to by the Dental Staff.
  • Provide thorough individualized oral hygiene instructions for each patient.
  • Monitor oral hygiene and periodontal condition on each patient seen for dental prophylaxis.
  • Sterilize instruments used for prophylaxis and other instruments as specified by the Dental Staff.
  • Provide oral health care services such as suture removal administration of local anesthetic and other services (if trained).
  • Oversee AIC Health Services Workers housekeeping and infection control procedures.
  • Perform necessary paperwork related to scheduling patients for dental prophylaxis and other Dental Services as directed by the Dental Staff.
  • Must have knowledge and experience in maintaining medical records and confidentiality.
  • Ability to collect and track data and enter data in the agencys electronic system. Track scheduling of patient care.
  • Knowledgeable of and follows BOP Dental Service and institutional policies to include Employee Standards of Conduct security infection control regulated waste management and data management.
  • The physical demands of this position are largely sedentary in nature however long periods of standing walking sitting and bending are required. Frequent mental and physical strain is inherent to duty and responsibility. Occasionally the incumbent will be required to lift boxes and equipment. As a rule this lift will not exceed 35 pounds.
  • Professional contacts are with inmate patients requiring dental care contract workers and other professional and non-professional civilians Public Health Service and Bureau employees. Incumbents have direct and frequent contact with AIC and through these contacts may impact on their attitudes and behaviors. Professional conduct is always expected under the BOP guidelines.
  • Perform minor clerical duties such as use of BOP electronic medical record computer documentation and scheduling scanning documents filing typing callouts institutional memorandums answering phones scheduling patients and maintaining stock records.
