The objectives of Argonne National Laboratorys Joint Appointment (JA) Program are to:
- Promote research and collaboration in areas aligned with the scientific and technical priorities of Argonne and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)
- Facilitate the building of world-class research programs by maximizing the unique intellectual and physical resources of both Argonne and partner universities
- Establish a network and an exchange of knowledge to enhance the intellectual vitality and research impact of Argonne and partner universities
- Increase synergies betweenDOEand academic programs
A Joint Appointee remains an employee of their home institution while contributing to the mission of both Argonne and the university.
There are two types of Joint Appointments:
FUNDED JA
The appointee has obtained written agreement from the host Argonne division to reimburse a portion of the appointees effort to the university.
Example: the appointee is actively participating on a research project at Argonne.
NON-FUNDED JA
There is no reimbursable effort occurring as part of the JA
Example: the reason for the JA includes establishing a professional network accessing unique resources participating on committees and/or research-based collaboration in anticipation of participating on a research project.
