Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • None

Essential Functions:

  • Conducts investigations for adult protective services in accordance with established policy;

  • Provides protection and care for at risk abandoned abused or neglected elderly or disabled adults and their families;

  • Develops comprehensive assessments of the client/family situation strengths needs and eligibility for Adult Services Benefits programs and Medicaid;

  • Counsels clients in the development of a responsible service plan based on the assessment;

  • Assists clients with the implementation of the service plan;

  • Teaches client problem-solving strategies;

  • Facilitates the education of clients in addressing areas of need regarding aging nutrition budgeting etc.;

  • Conducts comprehensive case management in nursing home adult care residence and personal care and adult companion services screening and reviewing cases according to process and procedure of DMAS and adult service parameters;

  • Maintains professional confidential case records according to state law and policy through the course of the clients service relationship with the agency;

  • Utilizes advanced computer technology for a variety of purposes including extensive statistical documentation of cases;

  • Provides accurate timely updated entries into State DSS Information Systems; Prepares and writes reports required or requested by this agency the courts or other professional agencies;

  • Assists and supports clients in their use of agency and other resources;

  • Coordinates and/or makes referrals for service to other human services agencies such as clinics employment services vocational rehabilitation services etc.;

  • Works cooperatively with other community agencies;

  • Petitions the court coordinating with the county or Commonwealth Attorney; provides testimony in court; and requests/recommends court orders;

  • Participates in the identification of social problems and advocates for the development of needed resources;

  • Interprets agency programs and policies to other agencies and the community;

  • Shares knowledge and experiences through participation in agency orientation in-service training new worker training case staffing and/or community education;

  • Participates in multi discipline groups;

  • Certifies agency approved providers;

  • Serves when called upon to assist in emergency situations including emergency sheltering;

  • Promotes cultural understanding and competency and an organizational climate of equity and inclusion;

  • Performs other related tasks as assigned.

Competency: Knowledge/ Skills/Abilities:

  • General knowledge of social economic and health problems; general knowledge of social institutions and the methods of the helping process; general knowledge of individual and group behavior;

  • Ability to identify social problems and needs and to assess the ability to individual and families to utilize services in problem solving; acceptance of rights responsibilities and differences of other;

  • Ability to work effectively through counseling and other methods with individual and families in helping them solve their problems;

  • Ability to plan and organize work;

  • Ability to understand and interpret laws polices and regulations;

  • Ability to communicate and establish effective working relationships with clients coworkers other professional and technical staff social agencies and the general public

  • Ability to prepare reports and maintain records;

  • Ability to use a computer and software particularly Windows/MS Office.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Minimum of a Bachelors degree in a Human Services field; or a Bachelors degree in any field with at least two years of appropriate and related experience in a Human Services area as mandated in Section 22VACof the Administrative Code of Virginia and implemented by the Virginia Board of Social Services.

Preferred Qualifications/Certifications:

  • Experience in adult protective services and working with elderly or disabled adults.

  • Work experience in a local department of social services.

  • Bilingual is preferred.

Physical and Mental Requirements:

  • Possession of a valid appropriate drivers permit issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia. Workers in this position are required to drive and they must meet eligibility requirements of the Countys safe driver policy.

  • Administers work to the public both in institutional and community settings.

  • Goes out into the community typically to clients home often in remote rural areas.

  • Frequent contacts with clients and coordination with other public and private agencies required.

  • Involves frequent driving walking and standing.

  • Works as needed beyond regular working hours.

Remote Work:

This position is eligible for remote work. All County staff must maintain residence within the

Commonwealth of Virginia.
