Job Summary

With general supervision from the Parks Maintenance & Operation Supervisor this position performs entry level mechanical work. Work involves maintaining the Citys Parks maintenance equipment small engines and vehicles in good working conditions.

Essential Duties & Required Qualifications

  • Perform and assist in preventive maintenance necessary to ensure the proper functioning of city vehicles and equipmentincluding trucks diesel and gasoline commercial mowing equipment powered electric generators construction equipment trailers chain saws weed eaters hydraulic tools etc.
  • Performs and assists in repairs of gasoline and diesel-powered parks maintenance equipment including special turf vehicles and tractors riding mowers trailers pumps small engines (2- and 4-cycle) chain saws blowers weed eaters pruning equipment etc.
  • Assists in engine mechanical and electrical repairs on all Parks and Recreation equipment.
  • Operates other City equipment as required including driving city vehicles skid-steer trailers and backhoe.
  • Picks-up and delivers equipment and vehicles to dealers and other outside vendors.
  • Follows safety standards and guidelines.
  • Responds to service calls for assistance; retrieves or repairs vehicles and equipment in the field as needed.
  • Responsible for always maintaining a safe work environment.
  • Organize and properly maintain the designated mechanic area and maintenance yard.
  • Operate a vehicle lift tire changer tire balancer and all other shop tools including power and hand tools.
  • Responsible for cleaning and maintaining shop and equipment.
  • Maintain equipment inventory maintenance records vehicle registration and inspections.
  • Communicate effectively with Parks Operations Manager and Crew Leader. Informs the Manager and Crew Leader of daily task status crew professionalism and any issues related to safety.
  • Utilize specific software to document equipment maintenance and repairs.
  • Work occasional weekends holidays evenings and special events.
  • Occasionally assist Parks Operations crew with mowing weeding projects repairs etc.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Education and Experience
  • High school diploma or its equivalent.
  • Minimum of one year related full-time work experience as a mechanic or a related field.
Required Certificates and Licenses
  • Valid Texas Class C Drivers License or equivalent from any U.S. State.
  • Active OSHSA 10 Construction certification OR must obtain certification within 90 days of hire (City can provide).
  • Active CPR/AED First Aid Stop the Bleed certification or must obtain certification within 90 days of hire (City can provide).
Preferred Qualifications
  • Two or more years related full-time work experience as a mechanic.
  • One Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certification.
  • Experience working for a government entity such as a City County or a State agency.

Knowledge Skills & Abilities

  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to follow detailed verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to balance time pressures emergency situations irregular schedules frequent change of tasks.
  • Must deal with the public and team members in a courteous and diplomatic manner.
  • Must be knowledgeable of auto mechanics and the operation and repair of heavy equipment repair hydraulic systems diesel and gasoline engines and heavy equipment diagnose problems and repair vehicles work with a variety of hand and power tools perform paint and body work on automobiles.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Skill in handling multiple tasks and prioritizing.
  • Analyze situations and adopt quick effect and reasonable courses of action.
  • Ability to operate various vehicles equipment power and hand tools communication radios dump truck skid-steer backhoe chainsaw shovel two-way radio cell phone computer measuring devices.
  • Ability to work hours other than the regular daytime schedule such as shift work on call or emergency response situations (i.e. early mornings afternoons evenings and late-nights shifts and weekends).
  • Must be able to wear city provided uniform and city issued personal protective equipment steel-toed leather boots gloves eye protection head protection safety vest and ear protection.
  • Workers must be able to follow safety procedures and use safety equipment to ensure personal public and personnel safety.

Physical Demands & Additional Information

While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop kneel crouch or crawl; talk or hear and taste or smell. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 75 pounds. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds and push pull drag up to 150 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision distance vision color vision peripheral vision depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
Working Environment
While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; moving mechanical parts; high precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; extreme cold; extreme heat; risk of electrical shock; explosives; risk of radiation and vibration. The noise level in the work environment varies between moderate loud and very loud.
