Primary Purpose of Position:

This positions regular duty station is the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences at Whiteville. The primary purpose of the Curator of Visitor Experiences is to manage the daily onsite operations animal care exhibits and facilities for the NC Museum of Natural Sciences at Whiteville. Duties include guest services and the development care and maintenance of exhibits living collections and facilitated learning areas. This position may supervise volunteers interns and AmeriCorps staff.

Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Determine layout for spaces and tabletop interactive activities for the Investigate Lab Naturalist Center Fossil Lab and the Discovery Forest
  • Create and facilitate educational programming for scheduled groups including live animal programs.
  • Welcome and orient all museum visitors including museum guidelines and rules.
  • Assist visitors with Museum activities including the Backpack Program Scavenger Hunts and engaging in the Discovery Forest Nature PlaySpace and laboratory spaces.
  • Perform the daily feeding cleaning record keeping and support activities associated with caring for the Whiteville Branchs live animal collection.
  • Facilitate opening and closing of the branch location each day ensuring that all areas are secure and ready for the public.
  • Assist with emergency and hurricane preparedness by assessing the Museum for hazards including the preparation and placement of sandbags for flood prevention and minor restoration duties following a severe weather event or facilities emergency.

Position/Physical Requirements:

  • Must be available to work the schedule of Tuesday - Saturday 9am - 5:30pm with occasional after hours and weekends required.
  • Must have a valid drivers license issued from within the United States or be able to obtain one within 90 days of employment.
  • Must be able to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects with or without reasonable accommodation.
Skills and Abilities / Competencies

Management Prefers:

  • Demonstrated experience creating and facilitating educational programming.
  • Demonstrated experience working with the public in a professional setting.
  • Demonstrated experience in caring for live animals and using them in educational programs.
  • Knowledge in evaluating security risks and addressing hazards.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelors degree in Art History Biology Botany Conservation Education History or Zoology from an appropriately accredited institution
AND
two years of museum or related work;
OR
an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Section/Unit Description:

The Statewide Initiatives section reaches as many North Carolina communities as possible and provides science education and natural history content across the state. Statewide Initiatives includes three branch facilities and the NC Science Museums Grant Program. These facilities include the NCMNS at Greenville & Contentnea Creek and the NCMNS at Whiteville N.C. The NC Science Museums Grant Program provides annual operational funding professional development and exhibit support to over 50 nonprofit and local government science museums throughout North Carolina.

The section champions the Museums mission and develops strategic partnerships throughout the state to address shared challenges and opportunities relating to nature science and science education in ways that are most responsive and relevant to local/regional needs and Initiatives supports the engagement of moreNorth Carolinians beyond the Museums walls and with communities across the state. These initiatives leverage the unique resources of NCMNS and include the Museums scientific research collections exhibitions educational programs and branch locations.

The North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences at Whiteville brings high quality science and nature programming to the communities of Southeastern North Carolina. Through the Museums building and exhibits outdoor learning and exploration spaces and educational and public programming the Whiteville Branch helps to expand the reach of NCMNSs mission and vision across the state.

Division Description:

The States museum devoted to science and nature North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences in central Raleigh is the largest institution of its kind in the Southeastern United States and with over a million visitors a year the states most visited museum. Its 300000 square foot downtown campus is augmented by Prairie Ridge Ecostation and satellite facilities in Whiteville Greenville and Contentnea Creek. Together they provide a variety of curriculum-focused classes onsite offsite outdoors and online for pre-kindergarten through graduate students across the state.

As a museum of nature we integrate the dual concepts of illumination and inspiration with the work we do and the many stories we a time of unprecedented environmental challenges nothing could be more critical.
