The primary purpose of the Mechanic Supervisor I position is to assist the Mechanic Supervisor II in supervising the staff at the facility. This position helps to schedule the work based on the amount of time needed for each job the availability of staff and type and urgency of repair. The Mechanic Supervisor I must ensure that repairs are completed in the most efficient manner possible focusing on quality maintenance and repair and giving maximum attention to safety. He must also ensure that total quality management practices are implemented in the daily operation of the facility to provide the highest level of service possible.The assigned workstation is Troop A Garage in Greenville NC (Pitt County).
Job duties include:
Assists the Mechanic Supervisor II in supervising and assigning work to garage and body shop personnel. Communicates performance standards counsels staff on work proficiencies and deficiencies and may conduct interim and annual performance reviews.
Manages inmate labor by monitoring and directing activities such as vehicle washing and garage cleaning.
Operates the computerized parts inventory and preventive maintenance system to maintain accurate vehicle repair histories using work orders fuel tickets and preventive maintenance data.
Monitors high-mileage vehicles and oil change records; ensures adequate stock of automotive parts and supplies; and prepares written reports emergency purchases safety inspection reports fuel reports time sheets and surplus property documents.
Processes vehicle warranty claims using manufacturer warranty manuals and ensures proper disposal and recycling of hazardous materials (oil antifreeze paint thinner batteries etc.) in compliance with safety and environmental standards.
Provides technical assistance to garage and body shop personnel including analyzing complex vehicle problems interpreting manufacturer manuals and utilizing electronic diagnostic equipment.
Performs routine automotive maintenance when workload demands exceed available staff or during personnel shortages.
Prepares vehicle damage estimates in the absence of the body shop supervisor and coordinates reimbursement conferences with insurance adjusters.
Maintains contact with outside vendors regarding parts purchases surplus property buyers and insurance adjusters regarding estimates.
Transports NCSHP and other agency vehicles using a rollback wrecker for special events new or surplus vehicles or repair needs.

Experience planning organizing and assigning vehicle repair work to maximize efficiency.
Proficiency in diagnosing automotive defects and determining required repairs.
Ability to read interpret and apply manufacturer manuals and technical reference guides.
Experience using computerized systems to track parts inventory and vehicle maintenance records.
Demonstrated ability to supervise and develop staff including providing feedback and supporting employee growth.
High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two (2) years of progressive experience in the repair of vehicles and/or equipment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Necessary Special Qualifications: May require current certification by the EPA as a Type I II III or Universal technician as required by 40 CFR part 82 subpart F.
