Primary Purpose of Position:
Love being outside and exploring some of North Carolinas most beautiful placesYou might enjoy working at a state park! The Division of Parks and Recreation is seeking an enthusiastic team member to fill our Parks Superintendent II position.

The Parks Superintendent II is responsible for the management of Singletary Lake State Park and has full accountability for its administration and supervision. Key areas of responsibility include interpretation and environmental education natural resource management program management law enforcement search and rescue emergency medical response wildland fire suppression and public relations.

Specific duties include hiring and supervising permanent employees; annually planning and prioritizing park needs; selecting training developing and directing park staff in a variety of occupations; developing and managing the park budget; establishing work and operational standards and policies; resolving employee and visitor concerns; guiding citizen support groups; interacting with local governments; presenting interpretive programs to a variety of audiences; and developing and managing special eventsall while overseeing the parks natural resources.This position is also responsible for managing state lake regulations at White Lake State Lake and Bay Tree State Lake.


Key Responsibilities:
  • Management of the park units and providing public safety services within the park.
  • Represent the park and the division with local governments businesses land conservancies and the public.
  • Coordination of recreation resource management and emergency service activities between the park and multiple public safety agencies; natural resource impacts from traditional services the management and monitoring of rare species; and preventing encroachments of park boundaries.
  • Planning directing managing and supervising all aspects of day to day park operations.
  • Planning work operations and short-range goals and objectives.
  • Leadership communication and public relations.
  • Overseeing the recruitment selection and development coaching counseling discipling and evaluation of permanent and temporary employees.
Position/Physical Requirements:
  • Typical work schedule is Monday to Friday 8:00am to 5:00pm; includes evening shifts and weekends on a rotating schedule.
  • Must possess and maintain a Certification as a Law Enforcement Officer in accordance with the provisions of the North Carolina Criminal Justice Training and Standards Commission.
  • Job offer is contingent upon successful completion of pre-employment screening(s).
  • Position is considered Essential/Mandatory Staff and required to work on adverse weather days during emergencies and may be called to work special events.
  • Must be available to work evenings weekends and holidays when necessary.
  • Must have or be able to obtain and maintain a valid NC drivers license within 90 days of employment.
  • Must possess Certified Interpretive Guide and/or Certified NC Environmental Educator certification.
  • Must possess and maintain Emergency Medical Responder and CPR Certification.
  • Must possess and maintain Fundamentals of Search and Rescue (FUNSAR) Incident Command Training (ICS)and 400.
  • Must possess and maintain all necessary wildland fire fighting certifications and division sponsored chainsaw training

Knowledge Skills and Abilities / Competencies

Management Prefers:

  • Demonstrated experience in law enforcement concepts practices and/or theories.
  • Demonstrated experience interpreting and/or incorporating laws rules and/or regulations that affect a large segment of the public work unit and/or program.
  • Demonstrated experience with emergency medical search and rescue and/or safety.
  • Demonstrated experience with evaluating and/or allocating resources procurement reviewing purchasing practices and/or contracts.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing or administering educational programs necessary to interpret ecological processes and/or manage natural/cultural resources.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelors degree in Parks and Recreation and/or Natural Science or related from an appropriately accredited institution
AND
four years of experience in area of assignment one of which must be in a supervisory capacity
OR
equivalent combination of training and experience.

Veterans and National Guard Preference
