Notes from Intake Call
Position Overview
Temporary role to cover maternity leave.
Potential for conversion to a permanent position if the candidate is strong.
Start Date: As soon as possible.
Work Location & Schedule
On-site: 4 days/week minimum.
1 day/week flexible (remote).
Initial phase may require 5 days on-site for onboarding.
Travel Requirements
Local travel only within the Bay Area.
Driving distance to suppliers.
Experience Level
Level 7 role (not senior yet but mid-level).
Minimum 8 years of relevant experience preferred.
Top Must-Have Skills
1. Technical Problem Solving
Root cause analysis (e.g. fishbone 5 Whys).
DOE (Design of Experiments).
Driving supplier corrective actions (prevention & detection controls).
2. Six Sigma / Statistical Analysis
Familiarity with CP/CPK SPC control charts run charts.
Experience with Minitab or JMP software.
Certification (e.g. Six Sigma CQE) is a plus not required.
3. Critical Thinking
Ability to ask probing questions to suppliers.
Drive actions and assess risks effectively.
Nice-to-Have Skills
CQE certification (Certified Quality Engineer).
Kaizen / Continuous Improvement experience.
Engineering capabilities:
CAD knowledge.
Understanding of schematics.
Experience with cable parts used in oncology systems (radiation therapy equipment).
Knockout Criteria
Must be able to explain validation clearly.
If a candidate cannot explain validation they are not a fit.
Interview Process
3 rounds:
1. Screening (30-min Teams call).
2. Interview with Zhi Geng Director.
3. Panel interview (smaller group ideally direct collaborators).
Option to request candidates to present a problem theyve solved using a slide deck.
Screening Questions for Recruiters to Ask Candidates
Recruiters should ask candidates to respond to the following prompts to assess fit:
1. Choose a technical project or problem you worked on directly. It should be work-related and something you personally resolved or played a key role in addressing.
2. Go into detail about how you participated drove or solved the problem.
3. Focus on a single professional accomplishment project or achievement and connect it back to why you are a good fit for Varian based on your past experiences.
4. Highlight your technical abilities - include charts data pictures or videos that illustrate your project if possible.
5. Select a project or achievement that demonstrates initiative learning something new or driving a problem to completion at your current or previous company.
