Scope of position:Provide students with didactic and laboratory experiences in anesthesia to ensure that on day 1 of practice they are able to:
1. Safely and efficiently anesthetize a healthy small animal patient for a routine elective surgery according to AAHA guidelines for Anesthesia (2020) Pain Management (2022) and ACVAA monitoring guidelines (2025).
2. Correctly assess and assign patients to an ASA Physical Status Classification and recommend an appropriate anesthetic fluid and monitoring protocol for the patient.
and respond to common anesthetic complications including hypotension hypothermia common ECG abnormalities and hyper/hypocapnia.
Expectations:
Attend VM3 live animal surgery and anesthesia laboratories.
Be the anesthesia representative in the Surgical Anesthesia and Community Outreach program including attending group meetings on a weekly basis.
Collaborate with anesthesia service faculty as necessary to ensure vertical integration of instructional materials.
Current anesthesia educational program at the Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine:
VM1 VCS 7339 lectures on intubation and pain scoring
VM2 - VCS 7398 2 credit didactic and laboratory course with associated skills assessment
VCS 7393 and 7394 Surgery courses with an anesthesia component in instruction and laboratory activities including OSCE assessments
VM3- VCS 7449 didactic and laboratory course taught in fall and spring semesters in which students have the opportunity to anesthetize and perform sterilization procedures on live animals
VM4 Anesthesia clinical rotation and Community Outreach elective rotation
DVM
Board certification ACVAA
At least 5 years of experience in clinical anesthesia
Experience teaching students in a laboratory or clinical setting
