Duties and Responsibilities:
This is a position that works with the Kapiolani Community College INBRE program Principal Investigator (PI) and biotechnology faculty and the INBRE laboratory director to support the laboratory program for the undergraduate research program. This position is under the general supervision of the Department Chair of Math and Sciences and the INBRE program PI.
Works collaboratively with faculty to help coordinate the lab experiences for the undergraduate research program;
Prepares sets up breaks down maintains and stores equipment instrumentation needed for lab experiments such as microscopes pH meters spectrophotometers balances laptops centrifuges electrophoresis equipment distillers etc.;
Works collaboratively with faculty and students in undergraduate research experiences (URE) to ensure safety coordination and integration of URE into shared laboratory resources and infrastructure;
Maintains cell lines and bacterial cultures used in URE experiments;
Prepares reagents and culture media and operates and maintains autoclave;
Prepares and maintains biological products such as antibodies and plasmids needed for URE and biotech classes
Provides expertise critical analysis and problem-solving within the clearly defined parameters of laboratory operations;
Maintains laboratory equipment common to microbiology and molecular biology laboratories such as autoclaves microscopes water distillation equipment spectrophotometers pH meters electrophoresis equipment liquid nitrogen incubators and CO2 incubators
Maintains inventory and assists in ordering materials and supplies;
Ensures the availability of supplies to meet the effective operation of the URE program;
Helps to monitor and train URE students in areas of expertise;
Assists in data analysis;
Collaborates with the other INBRE personnel to ensure the ongoing and current training of students in proper lab safety emergency biosafety and hazmat procedures;
May require working nights and weekends
Minimum Qualifications:
Possession of a baccalaureate degree in Cell and Molecular Biology Microbiology or related field and 1 year(s) of progressively responsible professional experience with responsibilities for performing basic microbiological and molecular biology techniques; or any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education knowledge skills and abilities as indicated.
Functional knowledge of principles practices and techniques in microbiology and molecular biology demonstrated by knowledge understanding and ability to apply techniques concepts and terminology of these fields of endeavor.
Functional knowledge and understanding of principles theories federal and state laws rules regulations and systems associated with working in a teaching and research laboratory in microbiology and cell and molecular biology.
Demonstrated ability to recognize problems identify possible causes and resolve the full range of problems that may commonly occur in a teaching and research laboratory in microbiology and cell and molecular biology.
Demonstrated ability to understand oral and written documentation write reports and procedures and communicate effectively in a variety of situations.
Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations groups team members and individuals.
Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer and apply word processing spreadsheet and bioinformatics software.
Experience with tissue culture bacterial culture DNA and RNA purification PCR gene cloning and transformation and expression antibody purification ELISA PAGE western blotting
Availability to work nights and weekends as and when required.
Desirable Qualifications:
Experience with INBRE undergraduate research program at Kapiolani Community College.
