The NC Zoo is looking for an enthusiastic team member that loves working outdoors and interacting with guests. Our Weekend Housekeeper position provides an outstanding guest experience while performing routine housekeeping tasks for the mens and womens public and staff restrooms ensuring a safe sanitary and Green environment for all guests and employees. The Zoos Environmental Services Branch supports the Department of Natural and Cultural Resources (DNCR) and the NC Zoo by providing professional housekeeping services for the Zoos buildings exhibits building grounds plazas trails parking lots large outdoor areas and special events as well as managing the Zoos recycling programs that contribute to a safe sanitary and Green Zoo environment for guests and staff. Staff in this branch are charged to provide housekeeping services guest relations and service recovery to the Zoos annual 800000 guests in a manner consistent with the environment of the Zoo as a tourism destination and accredited institution. This position has a large amount of customer interaction and contact with the public and must provide excellent customer service skills to all guests and staff.

This position is a 20-hour weekend only position.Scheduled workdays are Saturday and Sunday 6:30am 5:30pm off-season (November - March) and 8:00am - 7:00pm in-season (April - October) including holidays and may be required to work some weekdays as required. Lead worker over assigned seasonal employees. Position reports directly to the Housekeeping Supervisor.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Overall cleaning of the Zoos 5 miles of walking trails including trash removal from pathways natural areas recycle bins and trash containers.
  • Cleaning of office spaces and common areas.
  • Cleaning and restocking restrooms using various cleaning supplies and chemicals.
  • Sorting of recycling materials.
  • Use of two-way radio for communication.
  • Use of strong commercial cleaning chemicals and equipment such as pressure washers floor machines etc. as needed.


Job Requirements:

  • Must be able to work most weekend holidays and after regular work shifts as needed.
  • Must be able to work outdoors and indoors under all environmental conditions. Outdoor work is approximately 80% of the day.
  • Must have or be able to obtain within 60 days of employment and maintain a valid drivers license to drive a variety of utility vehicles and trucks.
  • Position requires participation in the Zoos occupational health program. Possible occupational exposure (Category B employee) to human blood borne pathogens. Possible exposure to dangerous chemicals (e.g. chlorine bleach cleaning agents etc.). Must follow Universal Protection Precautions and Bloodborne Pathogens Guidelines.
  • Must have good physical agility strength vision & hearing and the ability to perform strenuous physical work in extremes of weather and challenging physical environments e.g. outdoor animal enclosures. Specifically walk stand see animals & exhibits for observation and safety as well as hear animals sounds radio communication and emergency situations.
  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs. on a frequent basis with or without an accommodation.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities / Competencies

Management Prefers:

  • Demonstrated experience housekeeping/cleaning in a large complex facility such as a museum zoo aquarium theme park or closely related facility.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of cleaning and sanitizing procedures cleaning equipment and supplies methods and equipment used in industrial cleaning and operation tasks.
