Summary
Gowanus Green Team is a paid workforce development program focused on training young adults in green infrastructure management including rain gardens street trees parks and waterfront esplanades. The Stewardship Fellows will learn and gain experience through hands-on work including pruning weeding native plant propagation composting mulching and more. This position is ideal for someone who likes completing physical work outdoors and is a good communicator and team player.

Qualifications

  • Ages 18 to 26

  • Ability to work both independently and with a team

  • Reliable and punctual; arriving on time

  • Enjoys working outdoors doing hands-on physical work

  • Interest in pursuing a career in ecological or environmental stewardship

Physical Requirements

  • Work is mostly performed outdoors. Fellows will potentially experience adverse weather conditions including cold heat rain and snow

  • Requires using hand tools where carelessness could result in injury; standing for extended periods of time; stooping bending kneeling crouching lifting pushing and/or pulling; use of manual dexterity and fine motor skills

  • Requires moderate physical exertion - lifting pushing and carrying etc. up to 50 lbs for prolonged periods of time.

  • Requires communicating information with coworkers staff and community members

  • Ability to work in the Gowanus neighborhood including GCCs Lowlands Nursery 25 9th St Brooklyn NY 11215 local street trees and curbside rain gardens waterfront esplanades and NYCHA gardens located within Gowanus Houses and Wyckoff Gardens

Scope of Work

  • Under leadership of the Youth Programs Senior Manager provide hands-on ecological stewardship for Gowanus Brooklyn through green infrastructure management and urban forestry

  • Maintain local bioswales and curbside rain gardens through litter removal weeding pruning and planting urban-adapted native flora

  • Steward street trees through weeding pruning mulching and composting

  • Collect and enter tree health data through ArcGIS Field Maps app

  • Maintain local NYCHA gardens; planting fertilizing pruning and removing plants for optimal health and stormwater mitigation

Stewardship Fellows will learn horticulture skills through hands-on environmental and conservation work from September-December. They will work closely with our Youth Programs Senior Manager and Stewardship team to support green infrastructure and urban forestry in the Gowanus including local rain gardens Gowanus street trees and NYCHA gardens. Projects include tree bed care native plant management pruning weeding mulching and composting. They will also learn about Gowanus urban ecology history and current initiatives of Gowanus Canal Conservancy. Fellows have the option to return in March for the Spring session.

Compensation

$20/hour for 10 hours/week
